Would More Gun Control Lead to More Crime? A Debate

Does defensive gun use stop crime? Would more gun control save lives? Those were the topics of a public debate recently hosted by the Soho Forum, featuring Gary Kleck, a criminologist from Florida State University, and Paul Helmke, the former president and CEO of the Brady Center/Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence as well as the former mayor of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Kleck argued that there are at least four times as many defensive gun uses by potential victims as there are by criminals, and that new gun controls would reduce the defensive uses far more than the criminal ones. Helmke questioned Kleck's take on the data.

The debate was held on September 13, 2018, at the SubCulture Theater in Manhattan's East Village. Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein moderated. Comedian Dave Smith, host of the podcast Part of the Problem, was the opening act.

The full resolution read: While laws that prohibit gun ownership would reduce crimes perpetrated by criminals, that benefit would be more than offset by the foregone opportunities for defensive gun use by victims of crime.

It was an Oxford-style debate in which the audience votes on the resolution at the beginning and end of the event, and the side that gains the most ground is victorious. Kleck, arguing the affirmative, prevailed by convincing about six percent of audience members to change their minds.

Gun-free zones are the #1 reason for the large number of deaths in mass shootings. This is apparent to everyone except the brain-numb left.

The OP uses imaginary numbers.

Here are some real numbers:

These 4 countries have nearly eliminated gun deaths — here's what the US can learn

List of countries by intentional homicide rate - Wikipedia

Homicide rate Australia: 0.94 per 100,000
Homicide rate UK: 0.92 per 100,000
Homicide rate US: 4.88 per 100,000

The US homicide rate is 5.3 TIMES HIGHER than the UK
The US is way too deep into the gun culture to ever make massive gun control a good thing. All it would do is take guns out of the hands of law-abiding, trained/licensed gun carriers, and give the criminals a green light to enter gun-free zones, and make shooting galleries out of them.

The criminals will get their guns outside of the venues that gun control laws control. It will have little effect on them, but it would have a massive effect on the American people. Mass shootings would skyrocket.

Best way to reduce crime with guns, is to abolish gun-free zones, and have plenty of guns around, in the hands of good guys.

Gun crime in Australia is going up....Gun crime in the U.S. is down 75% as more Americans own and carry guns,......those are actual numbers....

Our knife murder number is higher than the total murder number in Britain.....

The number you don't want to face is the one that shows that their gun murder rate did not change after they banned and confiscated guns...it went up....then levelled off again, but stayed at the same level as before they banned guns...

Our gun murder number as more Americans own and carry guns...went down 49%....

Explain that.

And the reason for the difference is not solely attributable to guns

Yes....those countries always had low gun murder rates even before they banned guns...and banning guns didn't lower their gun murder rates....which shows their gun control laws did nothing.....

Now, the real problem for g5000 is the fact that after banning and confiscating guns, gun crime on the two island nations....that's right, islands.....is going up, not down, at the same time as gun crime in the United States, including gun murder is going down, as more Americans own and actually carry guns for self defense.

As socialism continues to destroy their social structures and their political correctness destroys the ability of their police to stop violent crime, Britain and Australia will become more, not less violent, and as that violence increase, their criminals will need and want more guns...and they will get them.
