Don't know why, but I want to ask...

I have been a part of other message boards but none that had politics as its main subject matter. I had fun on only one of those boards so I figure I have enough experience to know a good one when I find it. When I found USMB it was an immediate addiction for me so to speak. Not that I post a shitload but I love scanning through good threads and getting different points of view on different subjects. A lot of intelligent people on here imho.

Anyway... Those that have been a part of other political message boards, how does this one compare to you? I have no desire to go look for myself, so I will put myself at the mercy of you guys to fill me in.

:eusa_eh:

This is a first of this kind for me so I have no real comparison. I've commented on individual stories and been on topic specific sites. I like the format of multiple categories offered here. You can gravitate to what interests you.

I like this one also, compared to the two others I have been on. I don't read very far on the political threads that have much name-calling and profanity. Not that I judge those posters, just the negative content gets to me. Some of the posters maintain a sense of humor with their syntax and I appreciate those. The nice thing about it all, is that I can hop over to another Forum, and into a new world, so to speak. :)

I've noticed you have about one in five who seem to be serious on the political and religious stories I've read. The others seem to be playing a game.

I am a relative newcomer here, and this one has a much better atmosphere than the one I came from. I find the people here to be friendlier than the previous one, and there seems to be a good number of relatively open-minded, libertarian-types. I also like the moderating better here from what I've seen so far.

Well *HI* there Lizzie and welcome big time....:) I have been here 6 months and didn't know if you were new or just someone who didn't post often. I am glad you are here and I have very much enjoyed reading you. Hope you have a great time. There is good variety in topics and good moddies, too, as you have noticed.

I'm very new here and as I mentioned this format is all new to me. Somewhat overwhelming at first, appearing almost chaotic. I wasn't sure if it was something I would like and had no strong intentions of staying. I felt ignored or outcast almost. Then Lizzie was like a friendly face who jumped out of the crowd and engaged in conversation with me. So I stuck around and now I am having a good time with it. So thanks Lizzie.

I think this is as good a message board you're going to see for a couple of reasons:
A. Liberal to Conservative member ship ratio is about 50/50. I've been on boards that were heavily one way or the other and either you're part of the "circle jerk" or you get negged into oblivion. Not good for honest, open discussions.
B. It's run by a conservative, Gunny. He puts up with far more bullshit from Liberals than any other mod I've seen. Yeah, he'll rip you a new ass on line and in public, but I don't think he'll ever go behind your back to squash you as some other mods on other boards would. He's doesn't need to. He's tough but very fair. And no, I'm not trying to kiss his ass.

Go ahead. Kiss Gunny's ass. It's ok. Just dust it off first!

I have been at a few and some are moderated in a political way. This one has lots of people and you can get an real quick idea of what the masses are thinking about any new issue. There is a good level of freedom at this site and I commend the mods for that.

There are some very bright people here and plenty of not so bright. To get a good idea of what all Americans are thinking you need a real slice of life and this place is certainly that.

That's because I haven't been around to ensure hatred and animosity abound. I apologize for that and will rectify it asap.

You have a lot of reputation points for a bitch.

Wow, Count, you are a quick study. It took me a long time to realize the truth of your observations. The posters who play the game with humor, are the ones who keep me interested... Welcome!!

Love your Avatar! You may already know about that very famous lighthouse photograph but in case you don't here is some information.

I work part-time in an art and photography gallery in a seasonal tourism related town on the coast, and we must sell hundreds of the large photographs taken by Jean Guichard, a famous French photographer. The one you have selected is La Jument Lighthouse in France, taken off the coast of Brittany. It is in a series of nine or more shots, but yours is the hottest selling single one. His lighthouse photographs, often taken from helicopters in serious storms are top sellers. The man in the doorway [not seen in your Av] was waiting for an emergency helicopter to rescue him from a storm that had waves almost to the top of the lighthouse where he was trying to survive. The waves, the night before, knocked out all of the living quarters and associated furniture and appliances, and he did survive, contrary to popular opinion. His appearance in that doorway, is what compels the public to stop, then purchase, after I explain his presence there..:)

Wow, thanks for the really nice comments!:) I think that many of us who visit discussion forums tend to be a little on the introverted side, and feeling like you fit in can be very difficult, but if you hang around long enough, and figure out who the amiable people are, it can be really enjoyable. Some forums just don't have many amiable people.:D

I don't see it as ass kissing at all. I feel the same way.

I believe you are wrong there where you say to get a good idea of what all Americans think you can come here and see. Most people these days worry more about what car they are driving over what their politicians are doing. People that come here at least want to become more aware.

Thanks, I am a very big fan of his. I have seen all of his work. There were actually 3 or 4 of his other photographs I toyed with using as my avatar but finally settled on the most popular. In my opinion, one of the most spectacular too. You can feel the energy in the picture.

You are welcome Lizzie, but again, Thank you.

I've always considered myself to be more of an extrovert. At least I lived a very fast paced, high pressured lifestyle. Changes in my life have made me become more secluded, perhaps more introverted. If nothing else I've become refocused. I believe I am happier too. It's possible the real me is more introverted than I realized.

I have an avid interest in psychology- Jungian in specific. Thought you might be interested in this:

1. Extroverted attitude: a standpoint characterized by an outward flowing of personal energy (libido)—an interest in events, in people and things, a relationship with them, and a dependence on them. The extrovert is usually ...
a. motivated by outside factors and greatly influenced by the environment,
b. sociable and confident in unfamiliar surroundings, less cautious, less fearful, and
c. likes organizations, parties, and tends to be optimistic and enthusiastic.
d. Weaknesses of the extroverted attitude include:
(1) a dependence on making a good impression,
(2) easily making and breaking relationships,
(3) regarding reflection as being morbid and avoiding being alone,
(4) lacking self-criticism, and
(5) accepting the morals and conventions of the day--conventional.

2. Introverted Attitude: characterized by an inward flowing of personal energy—a withdrawal concentrating on subjective factors. The introvert is usually ...
a. . happy alone with a rich imagination, and
b. prefers reflection to activity.
c. Weakness of the introverted attitude includes ...
(1) a lack confidence in relation to people and things and
(2) a tendency to be unsociable, shy, and hesitant.
4. Each type misjudges the other; they tend to notice the negative aspects of the other.
a. The introvert is seen as egotistical, dull, and self-centered; the extrovert is seen as superficial and insincere.
b. Our Western attitude is extroverted; value is put on being outgoing which we consider being well adjusted. The East is seen as inscrutable.
c. Jung says that there is a marked tendency for either type to marry its opposite (each secretly hopes that the other will take care of the side of the life each lacks).
(1) All goes well as long as both persons adapt themselves to the needs of life.
(2) But each person speaks a different language--there is a lack of real understanding and a lack of full companionship

Very interesting take and slightly different from the commonly understood definition of the two. I think the traditional definition describes one as outgoing, the other as shy. This seems to define it more as drawing strength from surroundings in one and drawing strength from self in the other, if I am reading it right.
