What caused Mac to get fired in Korea? He was an old WW1 Vet who did his duty and retired as COS before WW2. FDR called him back and sweet talked the old Doughboy to be front line commander in the area most likely to be attacked by the Japanese as commander of Troops in the Philippines.. Apparently Mac misunderstood the assignment and thought he was a politician. He hobnobbed with the elite while he lived in a penthouse in Manila. When the inevitable happened Mac blamed subordinates. The old man never spent a single night in Korea when he became commander of UN Troops. He disrespected the president on at least one occasion when they met at Wake Is. and Mac showed up in a disheveled uniform and failed to salute Truman. Things got worse after the Inchon landing when Mac decided to invade North Korea even though the Chinese said they would get into the war if US Troops approached the Yalu river. Thanks to Mac's incredible ego and possible mental deterioration American Troops turned a victory into a humiliating truce and lost about 35,000 Troops in combat in three years when the mission was accomplished in less than a year. When US Troops walked into the biggest ambush in history at Chosin Mac blamed subordinates again and made wild claims about nuking China. He was lucky to be fired. Truman should have had him brought back to the US in handcuffs.
