The Republicans latest big lie is that we have high oil prices because the Dems won't let Big Oil drill or build new refineries. Poor Exxon, they will only make $100 billion dollars profit this year. They don't have any money to invest in refineries or drilling. No money to invest in alternative energy either. Poor Big Oil! They are the victims of high oil prices, not the bad guys.

Ahhh, there, there, Big Oil........don't cry......

Grampa McCain will soon be elected and everything will be alright.

Now I'm convinced you're loony. The isnt' a single person I know of that feels sorry for the oil companies. They have plenty of money to build refineries, just no incentive and no desire to continue to battle the mountains of regulation. You think it would be patriotic or something for them to invest at this in the companies of probable competitors ?

Big Oil has been buying up refineries and SHUTTING THEM DOWN. Regulation has nothing to do with it.

Today, the North County Times quoted an oil industry lobbyists as saying:

"California's gasoline demand has gone up "50 percent in the last 20 years," while the number of refineries in the state dropped from 32 to 14. "With our supply and demand so finely balanced, it doesn't take very much to see pretty dramatic changes in pricing,"

This statement, by Mr. Tupper Hull of of the powerful oil lobbying group, WiSPA, the Western States Petroleum Association, is extremely deceptive. Yes, California has fewer refineries, but it is because the oil industry has aggressively shut them down and consolidated its operations. Fewer refineries mean less competition. The result is a dysfunctional market where seven refining operations control 91.5% of the gasoline sold in the state. This is too much gasoline in the hands of too few companies.

Please provide a source for your accusation that "Republicans" say we have high oil prices because the Dems won't let oil corporations drill.

I'm not on the side of either. Neither am I on the side of baseless accusations by leftwingnuts.

The issue is a whole lot more complicated than your Republican bashing with enough blame to go around equally on ALL sides.

Nice post. I am all for drilling and building refineries, but the oil companies influence on our political system is deep and pervasive and mostly Republican. OpenSecrets is the best website. Check it out.....

Why do they have to pay Republicans so much more for influence ? Maybe they can get it cheaper from Democrats ? Your graph doesn't tell the whole story.

Funny post.

Maybe Republicans are more expensive. You know, all those club memberships and stuff.

Are you an Idiot or just a total partisan hack Kirk?

The Dems and their Enviro buddies have consistantly blocked more drilling and More Refineries, and you are going to try and blame big Oil?

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

I've been here for 2 weeks and i know kirk has been brain-washed by Barrack Hussein Obama. You say a harmful word about Barack Hussein Obama and kirk just conjures some substance-less rambling why Barack Hussein Obama's socialist ways are better then any other person's view.

Really?

I read this charge all the time.

Can you point me in a direction where we can see this happening, please?

I do not recall a single political battle where the Dems and their enviro buddies prevented any refiner from building a new refinery.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't know of a single case of that ever happening.

Evidence, please?

I told Jreeves last night that the GOP Congress back in 2001-2005 (forgot the exact year), passed a law that said oil companies will never have to pay America more then $56 a barrel.

That debunks the myth that they're costs are going up too.

But here is how they make that claim. They buy oil for us off the world market. So they are buying gas for us at $140 a barrel, and passing the cost on to us. But they are also selling our gas on the world market for $140 a barrel, and not sharing the profits with us. Get it?

This is why we should not give them ANWAR or Offshore. And this is why giving them those things would only lower prices a couple cents.

Now if they promised to sell half of it to America cheap and put the other half on the world market? That might be something I would consider.

Republicans only want to privatize profits and they always want to socialize the losses.

Does anyone know how much Exxon pays our Government for the oil they are taking from us to sell on the world market? Don't take my word for it. Find out for yourself. Isn't that amazing none of us know? Hmmmm?

Well let's just tell em that they can't have anymore of our oil and see how that works out.

Or, tell them they have to share and can't gouge us or we will socialize oil like Hugo Chavez did in his country, Venesuela.

It's very simple.

You act as if they have us by the balls and there is nothing we can do about it. Well there isn't, as long as the GOP are running things. Wake up.

Do you prefer Fascism or Feudalism?

Every generation, it is often said, must relearn the lessons of history. This generation is getting a crash course.

Shall we have a government of, by, and for We, the People? Or shall we be governed by a powerful elite made up of the super-rich, multi-national corporations, and well-paid shills who do their bidding?

As we view today's corporate takeover of our government, We the People are faced with an historic challenge. As Franklin Roosevelt said in 1936, as the result of "new uses of corporations" a "new royalty" has emerged in America.

"It was natural and perhaps human," Roosevelt said, "that the privileged princes of these new economic dynasties, thirsting for power, reached out for control over Government itself. ... And as a result the average man once more confronts the problem that faced the Minute Man."
