The South China Morning Post reported last week that reports from men have increased in recent years, from 181 domestic violence complaints in 2014 to 1,571 such complaints in 2018

What on the world is going on in that nation of fervent order?

Oh yeah, some claim it to be a society of patriarchal oppression.

That being the case, why this?

Either domestic abuse against men is on the rise in Japan or more men are feeling emboldened to report in recent years.

It seems the men are the one stepping forward to complain about being abused by their wives – or girlfriends.

The Post reported a survey of Japanese men in 2017 found the problem may be much higher than reports indicate. The survey found that 14.5% of male respondents said they had been abused by a domestic partner, an increase from the 10.8% who said the same in 2014 and the 8.1% who said as much in 2002.

Interesting post.

DV wasn't taken seriously in the United States a generation ago; in the 70's a man who committed abuse against his wife would be arrested, and he would be diverted by the courts, and be ordered to complete counseling; at the end of 6 months the defendant would appear in court for a review, and the judge would read and consider a report from the probation office.

If the defendant completed the counseling as ordered, and the report from the PO indicated a satisfactory adjustment to diversion, the charge would be dismissed, and he would not have a record of conviction.

Then, MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Drivers) began to attend court when men had been cited for a DUI with injury, and take notes. Judges took notice and so did the legislatures in many states.

And then victims of DV and their advocates began to take notes too. Now, DV has some very serious consequences, and DV includes dating relationships (even one date) and violence against a relative.
