The President should not see this as a problem at all, if the Afghanistan people do this form of government change this will result in the government partner element of solution for Afghanistan being achieved and the U.S. military has the performance capability to readily provide the military element of this solution all that is needed is right out of the Anbar (Iraq) Province chapter in the U.S. military manual. Any military analyst worth his salt will tell you that if local leaders dont want an insurgency operating in their area it wont be operating in this area. Knowledgeable Afghanistan analysts will tell you that if there is a good government alternative in many areas of Afghanistan that local leaders can rely on for the long-term these leaders will dump and turn over the Taliban absolutely and without a doubt. Plus if America doesnt succeed in Afghanistan there will be many serious negative ramifications, al Qaeda will be back in business producing terrorism from Afghanistan, the Pakistan government will have no reason to eliminate the Taliban movement on their soil which will pose a serious destabilizing threat to a stable democratic Pakistan, a nuclear armed country and it will weaken Americas ability to suppress militant Islamic movement around the world because it will weaken Americas reputation; Afghanistan changing its form of government and providing the good partner element of the solution to go with the US military might part of the solution would be outstandingly good fortune for the U.S. which the U.S. government should jump on to utilize any problems would be dwarfed by the good fortune this development would present. To briefly explain why these negative ramifications dont call for the U.S. to not currently plan an exit for Afghanistan is that America has no practical choice, U.S. military might alone will not do the job in Afghanistan what the U.S. will get if it tries military might without a good Afghanistan government partner is a Vietnam situation or a Soviet Union in Afghanistan situation if one prefers that label where the local population in a country turns against the foreign army and causes such casualties on the foreign army the foreign army leaves.
One last point is that the American people should and will see the Republicans position on Afghanistan as a foolish and costly strategy. The Republican position is that they want the President to give General McChrystal the 40,000 to 80,000 troops he wants immediately. This is foolish for many reasons one being that many of these Republicans arrogantly believe that America alone has the power to solve the security problem in Afghanistan which is completely a mistake the power to solve the Afghanistan security problem to a significant degree rests with the Afghanistan people they need to reject the Taliban- it is a simple but important concept America isnt in control of this situation. In addition, many Republicans foolishly believe that if security can be established in Afghanistan which a troop build-up can do than Afghanistan will become functional and the Afghanistan people will support the central government and all will be well a repeat of the Iraq strategy. These Republicans are mistaken because Iraq is much different than Afghanistan, first Iraq is a much wealthier nation than Afghanistan (with its oil wealth) there was a much greater incentive for the Iraqi people to support their central government than the Afghanistan people have, the Iraqi people expect the central government to work they have a long history of it working they expect working infrastructure electricity, water, sewage, roads, etc. Afghanistanis dont have that type of history and thus type of expectation, Afghanistanis are not that well educated, Afghanistan is a much more corrupt society imagine the depth of corruption when authorities in the army and police skim money from the salaries of their staff and such skimming is rampant. The Republican plan on Afghanistan is just like their plan on the stimulus package and their plan on health care reform it is the plan of an ideologue jackass!
