Wow,most people do want less Government in their lives according to this poll so far. I really did think there were more Big Government folks on this site.

Do you want more or less oil in your car?

More. Which is another reason i support limited government.

I would like to know what it is that you cannot do......or are forced to do......by "big government" that you were allowed to do or were free not to do 10, 20, 30 years ago?

All of this whining about government intrusion seems to have little basis in reality.

The poll is stupid, of course. Americans, in general, are not in favor of being told what to do or what not to do. That goes for "liberals" at least as much as it does for "conservatives".

Well, lets see.

About fifteen years ago, our city government decided you could not finish your basement unless you had two openings that met certain dimensional requirements and also had a certain square footage of opening.

If you chose to finish your basement without a permit and they catch you, you could be forced to tear the entire thing out.

Not long ago to finance a new "city center" that was suffering financial difficulty, they proposed a 3/8 cent increase in the sales tax. They had the vote by sending out mailers that looked like regular junk mail. Through their contacts, they got the word out to people they knew would back it....and guess what ? It passed. Very small response, about 70% in favor.

They also annexed a section of land to our west that pulled several peole who have several acres into the city. These people used to burn leaves and fields. Now they need a burn permit which the city won't hardly give out.

Ond on and on and on and on..........

Should we mention health care. Being penalized if you don't purchase health care.

The founders would freak.

Someone was looking for examples.

How about the EPA ? People will say....well, you just don't like clean water. I can promise you that if the EPA went away, our water would not be dirty. That is simply a stupid argument.

But what has the EPA done for us. Well, they mandated oxygenates into gasoline and when refining came up with MTBE, they said great. Then they found it in water somewhere in the BFN. But they banned it. And refining was stuck with hundreds of millions of dollars of useless assets. And guess what that did to the price of gasoline ?

Most of the rest of civilizied society uses MTBE (you know those folks that the left always points to when the want to talk about health care).

Thanks EPA.....also enjoy that boutique gasoline in the summer....the kind that costs so much.
