Do Speed Limits Matter?

I'd say equally as threatening are cars who cut trucks off, or otherwise can't handle the concept of 'sharing' the road.

True, because if people have not driven a truck or bus they don't realize that the reaction time is much slower for a large vehicle. That is part of what I said about not licensing stupid people including those with no concept of the relationship between time and space. Seems like with the obsession with video games they could design one that simulates real driving conditions and use that as part of the drivers test.

I will block speeders when I have the opportunity in my 4x4 Dodge Ram 2500 (with a hemi) I angers me to see thoise endangering the lives of others on the highway in their efforts to go faster than the flow of traffic (especially when my son, Jake is with me)

This pisses me off more than anything. What gives you the right to drive 55 in the left hand lane when the flow of traffic is going faster then you? You wonder why accidents are caused? ITs because people are driving too slow in the fast lane then they have to pass on the right. Thats how accidents are caused. Also when a person drives 55 then all of sudden speeds up just to piss some one off who is trying to pass them. Thats how road rage is caused. Get on with your life and worry about your driving. Your never going to see that driver again so let him get by you and get on his/her way.

True. People who can't keep their cool should turn in their licenses or have them taken away.

Gawd, now your posting the "LAW"
Try following the LAW! GEEEEEEEEZZ

The law is, Drive to facilitate Good Traffic Flow. The Law realizes sometimes this means driving 'faster' than the speed limit. The law NEVER okays left-lane camping.

Pot. Kettle. Black.

If you continue, and force a road-rage, I hope you are prosecuted under the full extent of the law. People like you cause accidents with your aggressive/provoking driving behaviour.

Hypocritical...see, in your first paragraph, you admit to forcing YOUR will upon those driving faster than you, but in your second paragraph, you claim the road belongs to everybody. Change your ways before somebody dies - that's all I can say.

THANK YOU! If no one else was gonna post it, I was.

Because of my job, I see the results and victims of road rage, as well as unintentional accidents.

What Fmr stated he does, is something that i had to process a title for. The accident killed a 24 yo pregnant woman, and the fetus died as well. Her 2yo son was paralyzed from the waist down as well. All because someone did exactly what Fmr does. The guy changed lanes to keep her from passing him, and she couldn't slow down that fast, rearended him, and her car flew off the road, rolled 6 times and hit the bridge support. I got real emotional every time i had to deal with that file, thinking about that poor woman, the unborn child who never got a chance outside the womb, and the 2yo who will never see his mother again.

Fmr, your best bet, is to let the person go by. If your instincts are to do otherwise, think about who may be IN that car. Not only that, is the cops will see them before they see you. Let them handle it.

What planet are you on? People only in the left lane to pass...Not anywhere in the country I've ever been in....Speeders just want their "own" lane that's all..Nice try.:p:

Sorry Mr.P, there are highways all over the U.S. that have signs that read "Keep right except to pass".

Louisiana just passed a law that makes "rolling roadblocks" a ticketable offense. Always pisses me off when some jackass takes 10 miles to pass someone because he's only going .25 miles an hour faster than the guy in the right lane.

How about this... If you want to police traffic, and even attempt to control it, become a COP.

Otherwise, keep your ass in the middle, and/or right lane where you belong. :)

As long as the driver is within 5 mph of the speed limit, he/she's not speeding.

Technically that isn't true. One mile an hour over is technically speeding. There are some cities who will give you a ticket for 5 miles over.

most cops here won't bother unless you are more than 10 mph over---or they're having a bad day/week/month/year/decade/century...

oh, and if you don't 'get' their pathetic attempt at a joke, like my husband...

I've been cited for '30mph in a 25mph zone'.

:(

I've been "warned for approaching inappropriate speeds" while doing 30 in a 25. :D

Small towns suck.

The whole speeding argument is wrong , lack of common sense is the real problem .Dumbasses that think that they can buy a fast car and suddenly have the skill level or ability to drive the car as fast as it is capable are a huge problem . Even with all of the skill in the world you are only as good as the others around you . There are so many variables that it is insane to drive at high speed . Tires can self destruct at any age , road hazards , steering failures , dimwits on cell phones or watching DVDs , Mommies and Daddies yelling at there brats in the back seat , eating stuffed burritoes and applying hot sauce at 80 mph , reading paperback books on the steering wheel . . . I have seen all of these and more and it is getting worse daily . How can it possibly be safe to approach traffic at 30 mph faster than every one else is going especially if they are already traveling at 70?
In a perfect world it would be fun to go fast and enjoy the abilities of a sports car that has the capability but this isn't a perfect world . It is kinda like riding a motorcycle , it's not whether you will wreck it .. . it's when you will . It is just not up to you alone out there , you can be the greatest rider on the planet and hit some sand in a turn and eat it big time . Or be doing 120 in a Porsche , everything is perfect , and a tire that is barely making contact with the road blows . . . 10 rolls and an endo and you're dead .
Those guys that drive race cars are driving fast with others of high skill level on tracks that are closed and kept as perfect as possible and are driving vehicles that are not only designed to go fast but are rebuilt after every race . . . they still wreck .
Besides the safety is the fuel consumption . If you have ever used the computer in the vehicle that gives you a semi-accurate reading of your fuel consumption , you have had to see how mile per gallon rate goes down exponentially above 50 . I drove a streamline van the other day and monitored this reading and witnessed as much as a 8 mpg drop between 55 and 75 on flat straight highway, this is a bit more significant in the era of 60+dollars a barrel oil .
Leaving for your destination 5 minutes earlier gets you where you are going sooner than leaving later and doing 120 and it is a lot safer , economical and certainly a lot less stressful .There really is no excuse to endanger others for a selfish adrenaline rush , if you want to haul ass get on a race track or in an airplane.

Simple.. Be one of the people that actually *checks* their side, and rearview mirrors. If you SEE someone moving faster than you are, slide over until they pass. Then, if you want to move back over, do it. But, remember the signs: Slower Traffic Keep Right.

Why is it that people think it's their God-given RIGHT to take matters in to their own hands, and set the speed for everyone else?

If ya can't drive it, don't buy it...or at *least* keep your sorry ass off the freeway. :D In fact, I think you should have to pass a whole new set of reflex tests every year.. If you fail, you can drive in residential areas only. Nowhere that exeeds 25mph, tho. If it takes you 4 hours to get to the grocery store because you're not allowed on the freeway, too bad. Move.

I get better mileage the higher speed I average.

I think d would agree with me.

I usually get about 18-20 in the city. When I drive somewhere that is mostly freeway driving (averaging between 75 and 80 mph), my mileage has been as high as 26 mpg.

Yeah... what she said!

I usually commute to work at the speed limit - 60 mph - setting my cruise control and driving in the rightmost lane. Why? 95% of the drivers on teh road drive faster than the speed limit. Why should I hold up traffic? Plus, in the rightmost lane, I don't have to worry about who's behind me. If someone wants to pass me, they can use the left lane(s), which is why those lanes are there.

Re-Read.

"I block speeders in"

That's aggressive and dangerous...self-righteous too.
Most states have Traffic-Flow laws under which people can be prosecuted for driving to slowly REGARDLESS if they were doing the actual limit, or not.

"If Idiots who drive in the left lane without ACTUALLY being in the act of passing, would follow traffic laws would die, the freeways would be MUCH safer places"

I obey the law. I do not speed, and use the lane that is most applicable for my travel.

65mph means 65 (not 66 or 72 or 85)

If you are not a law abiding citizen and become enraged at someone obeying the law, then you are the one with the issues that need to be dealt with, and perhaps spend a little time in the court system, to understand what the law means.

How come you do not understand that any speed above the legal limit is illegal?

Is looking at a little child porn alright?
