Do road projects create jobs?

Well seems you made up your mind. Well when I drive by a construction site in building a new bridge (New keyword), they were suspended in the area making the columns.

Now, its not to keep unions in business. Its to resurface old roads, build better bridges, and make traffic move much smoother. But I bet you didn't notice, but yes go ahead and bitch that the government does nothing for you. Not the fact that without roads, we would have to walk to work or pay enormous toll prices every day.

But yeah HORRIBLE GOVERNMENT!!!!

The fair way to support our road construction and repair is to charge a tax based on weight and miles travelled.
Or at least convert the fixed per gallon road tax on fuel to a % of price tax.
As fuel prices rise so does road construction/repair consts both in operating and material costs. but the gallons of fuel consumed tends to drop as the price rises so the road tax available for projects are cut short on funds.

In my view, road projects at best create temporary jobs. And in many areas they unfortunately provide work opportunities more for illegal immigrants than for American workers. Trying to rely on infrastructure as a stimulus in hopes that it will have a similar effect as when the interstate system was first created ignores a fundamental difference in the times. Back then, commerce was limited and subsequently opened up, because of the creation of the interstate system, and it is in that way that the most job opportunities emerged. Nowadays, commerce has the reach, even if some of the roads suck. Making the roads a bit smoother simply won't offer any substantial impact on the economy.

Even if it gave money to illegals, don't they spend the majority of the money? You know keeping people employed. They actually spend alot of their money.

Or do they just keep the same business busy employing the same unions slobs leaning on shovels ?

I must have missed the union slobs somewhere. Next time you want a building built, call some of your Mexican slobs to do the work.

So lets get on with building glass highways of the future.

And if paving the roads over doesnt fix the economy by this time next year..............PAVE THE MOTHERSUCKER AGAIN!!!

Wouldn't you like to lay down a road bed that lasts forever & never needs repair? The glass highway is the answer. Of course, you couldn't stimulate the economy by paving roads. Tsk!

Or better yet.....

Go to non-union South Carolina, build it cheaper, staff it cheaper, and pay less taxes once it's opened so you can do more for your employees!!!

Thats why Charleston just landed Boeing away from Seattle. Charleston has 6,000 high paying jobs coming this year due to Boeing. The local Seattle newspapers mocked and trashed South Carolina for weeks after Boeings announcement, even making cartoons showing southern stereotypes. But we'll have those jobs and Seattle wont. Why? Non-union labor, lower taxes.

Sorry lefties. But thats the wave of the futuer in labor. You'll have to EARN and RE-EARN your job yearly. Work harder than Bubba, Jamal and Pedro, and you'll get the raise and one of them will get fired.

I'm not against paving roads.

I am against using road paving as the bedrock of economic recovery. That doesn't end well.

Actually, SC has one of the toughest immigration laws in America, and one similar to Arizona's is coming up through Columbia this year. In 2005, this state had a large illegal population, and since enacting the tougher laws, it's nearly un-noticable now. All these jobs are going to local, blue collar citizens.

And you say SC is living off California? Huh? I mean.....what? Really? Do you even keep up with current events? The other 49 states are gonna have to bail out CA. Your CA taxes go to the massive welfare state you all created. You're supporting the SanFran hippies and drug addicts.

Dude....you just called South Carolina a "welfare state"? You know this is probably the state with the LEAST social welfare opportunities in America, right? You've obviously studied and visit SC very little haha.

I just feel America can do better than paved roads, increase productivity, save lives, cut our dying dependency on oil, create an environment for new business, and stmulate the economy.

For every USD your state pays in federal taxes, it gets back $1.35. That .35 cents on the USD comes from my CA federal taxes dude. That makes you a welfare state, beholden to all California Union workers. jus saying. We pay in far more than we get back.

I agree, we can do much better.

But the deal is, government cannot do that. Everything the gov't touches is run inefficiently. Taxing the people to death will cripple us and our economy.

But politicians get elected on promising shit. And they can't deliver shit without funding. And they cant get funding without taking more money from the people. And doing that hurts business, creates a dependent population (which means less productive).

I disagree on oil. The left is portraying a scenario which we are running out of oil. We aren't. Peak Oil is a myth. There is plenty if we would actually drill it. But they are intent on shoving the green movment down our throats. Why? Because they are invested in GE. GE is making all the green technology. Gore and his buds massively invested in GE. GE owns NBC and MSNBC. Hence the NBC hard lean to green.
