I think they should both have been fired. They both used fighting words on the employer's premises....no excuse for that, IMO.

Even in construction or manufacturing, you cannot call your coworker a "motherfucker" in anger.

I look at it like this.... Shit fuckin happens. We're not perfect and a racist or two in the crowd does not bother me. If two people can be respectful at the workplace I have no care what their conversations consist of at the bar. But there should also be allowances for mistakes. They gave the white guy the opportunity to apologize and he refused.

I see your point that maybe both should be canned but I see it differently. I have no personal relationship with either people by the way. I have never even spoke to either one. We have over 600 employees there.

If the "first guy" referred specifically to the other's race, why wasn't that racial? I AM not saying what he said in retalliation was the correct thing to do, just asking. If someone called someone a "black MF" wouldn't that be racist too?

What a pile on this thread has become, and it illustrates one point about the new "must be PC at work" rules. Often, it isn't about what was said -- instead, it's about some subtext we read into the speaker's comments -- or the fact that we dun like him, and wish he had bad motives, or that we're just in a pissy mood right that second.

I worked with a black guy, a secretary, and he got cross-wise with a supervisor. Wasn't his fault, as best I understand it. He was AFSCE so she could not fire him, until, like an idiot, he forwarded a video someone sent him on his work pc.

The video was a photo of several celebrities' heads attached to cartoon bodies and the song was not obscene. Only a 12 year old could have found it offensive but she decided to claim it upset her (although she did not receive it from him, but in the generation she did finally get, his work id was attached as one of several people who shared it). So she fired him for using a work pc to forward "porn".....a career-ender if ever there was one.

If I owned a company, on day one I would have every employee take an "I will behave like a grown adult at work" pledge. Indulging the ultra-sensitive among us is dragging us all down, IMO.

It was racial. It's a fine line as to whether that was a racial slur per se. What was said in retaliation, "******," was most definitely a racial slur. No ambiguity.

I'll address this question as something detached from the original scenario. There is a double standard, and I could see a black person hypocritically shouting racism if a white person said "black mother fucker."
I recall an incident when I was in the Marines where a white male Marine made a racial slur against a black female Marine, and she went off at him, saying "white mother fucker" this, and "white mother fucker" that. After she had cooled down, she talked to me, and while I could understand her being upset, I told her straight up that what she did in turn was no better. She didn't go off at me, but that definitely was not what she wanted to hear. She wanted me to be a shoulder to cry on, and I couldn't in good conscience do that.

So basically what I'm saying is that there are double standards. What we must do as a society is make an effort to bridge those gaps and get rid of double standards.
