Too bad they're not a "protected" class.

PARMA -- Beginning March 1, Parma Community General Hospital will no longer hire smokers.
The hospital made the announcement Feb. 1.

Larry Jeffries, PCGH’s senior director of human resources, said the new policy is part of the hospital’s campaign to promote good health among its workers.

“It has evolved over the last two-three years,” Jeffries said. “We want our employees to have a healthy lifestyle.

“We believe lifestyle is a choice and that everyone has a responsibility for a healthy lifestyle,” Jeffries said.

Those now working for the hospital, and those hired between now and March 1, won’t be affected by the new smoking policy.

However, starting March 1, job applicants will have to take blood tests that will determine their nicotine levels, if any.

The hospital won’t hire job candidates who test positive for nicotine but it will direct them to smoking cessation programs, for which the candidates would pay.

After 90 days, rejected applicants will be allowed to take a second blood test. If they test negative for nicotine, the hospital will consider hiring them.

What do you think about this? Do you think they would get away with a similarly "health conscious" policy of not hiring fatsos?

Good idea, who wants an obese doctor or nurse? Those who use tobacco are stupid, why would any employer hire stupid people?

People are hired all the time based on looks.... this country is full of LOOKS Nazis....

In this economic climate, if it is a choice between testing positive for nicotine because of second hand smoke, or having a job, the nasty stinking smoker has to GO!

Why do they really care?
They want to save money on the employer provided benefits.

I wonder how many overweight people they have on staff. If you google and image with the hospital's name, you'll find that indeed, some of their central staff is overweight. Even the guy that runs their cardiovascular clinic is a fatty....

It's discrimination which is allowed because they are not a member of a protect class. Exactly what you said. Fat people are next.

I think it's their right to hire or not hire who ever they want for what ever reason.

You mean like the right they have to announce they no longer hire blacks on account of not wanting supplies to go missing?

Ever try to Pawn a box of paperclips or some post-it notes? Not a huge black market there. ;)

Anyone know how long a person would have to quit in order to pass the blood test?
Probably not very long, it is smoke so it could stay in the fat cells like marijuana. If you follow my clean out plan, probably for only about a week.
Plus there is always fake pee. ;)
