DirectTV or DISH Network?

This is shaping up to be a blowout. I really don't care about the NFL, so that's not a concern. But my Comcast is pushing $150 per month, for TV and internet. I just want to have the channels I normally watch, plus HBO and maybe Showtime.
i hear direct is slightly less expensive, i have dish
and i disagree with the user interface being easier on direct
do you plan to keep the cable for your internet connection? if so, you would be more cost effective to keep your cable tv than change just that to a sat service
and the sat internet services are barely better than dialup
but $150 a month for both isnt bad

I've had both dish and directv. Between the 2, I prefer directv. The user interface is nicer and the customer service is better IMO.
having never experienced the customer service on direct, i cant comment on that, but as for dish, i have to agree that they leave MUCH to be desired
while i have generally had my problems resolved when i contact them, they have been shown to be far less than knowledgeable of exactly what the problem was
the actual tech that is sent out, have been great

but one major point that recently pissed me off is they added new channels to the lineup and i wasnt getting them because the dish(s) i had were not pointed at the right sats and they told me that i needed a 3rd dish put up to get them, when the tech got here he told me i didnt need a 3rd dish, but a new one pointed at different sats
what got me pissed off was they already KNEW what sats my dishes were pointed at and that i wasnt getting the new channels, but never made any effort to inform me of this

Direct starting getting worse and worser with their reception.

Dish dropped FX and I'm a HUGE Sons of Anarchy fan :D

Comcast provides TV, Phone, and ISP for what I was paying for just Dish.

Merry Christmas, Dive

Synth...i had the Dish for a long time never had any problems and they had good customer service.....now since i had AT&T phone and Cell phone service along with their internet....and never had a problem there....i dropped the Dish for U-VERSE TV.....and so far ....Great....and even the HD looks better.....when i had Time-Warner Cable i had nothing but Customer Service problems.....
Harry: My dad has U-Verse, and I liked it a lot. I wish we had that option in my area.

Radioman: $15 per month for internet? Are you on dial-up???

Dish still has FX

No, I was going to try DSL. I don't do any heavy duty downloading, so I don't really need 10+ megs per second speed that I get with cable.

I wouldn't mind the $150 if I watched more TV, or if I watched even 20% of the available channels. I mainly watch cable news, Comedy Central, BBCAmerica, HBO, Bravo, and a few others.

Synth, DSL is SO much slower. When I am away from my cable Internet and on DSL I feel like I am back on dial up. (not quite that bad, but definitely noticeable).
It doesn't just affect downloading, but merely surfing. And just think how slow it would be on your porn sites then.

I was informed that Direct TV, along with the others have hidden costs that you find out about once you sign up...so I am not sure you are going to save a thing.

Can you get your Internet scaled back to 5mg, and cut some cost?

they all have "hidden charges"
like unless you allow direct debit from your bank account or credit card, dish charges an extra $10 a month for HD service
then they charge a DVR fee if you want that and that is for EACH DVR you have, not just a single use fee
and on the lower packages you might not get all the channels you want
i am seriously considering dropping my Dish service for the Time-Warner Cable service since i already get my internet from them
the total bill would be a little bit more than what i now pay for dish alone

So in the end, if you do that, you will come out cheaper.

I don't come close to watching all the channels I have, but I don't watch much TV.

yup, it will be a lower price, over all, but i will likely lose some channels i really enjoy, like NFL net
but i have a current contract that doesnt expire till the end of april so i wont be making the change till near the end of april
it will depend on what i i can afford

I have NFL...not that I watch it much. Do you really?

Year round? Oh....I remember you watching reruns of the Pats games like months later.

Well, maybe they have a package with that which would still be cheaper than what you pay now..

Have had Direct for a little over a year now and only minor problems her in snowy W. Michigan.

When they came to install the dish I assumed it would be somewhere on my roof. But because of lots of trees they had to mount it on about a 4-5 foot pole they stuck in my side yard, which I wasn't too thrilled with initially. Since planted a small bush to hide the pole and it's fine. But it turned out better as 3-4 times last winter I had no pic or sound and "no video signal" flashing on my TV screens. Turns out all I had to do was get the snow off the dish with a car brush and had pic/sound immediately. With a very tall two story house I wouldn't be thrilled about climbing up there to clear the snow and no telling how long I'd have to wait for mother nature to take care of it.

I've recommended it to a couple of friends here who were also battling Comcast and told them to insist Direct use poles for them too to avoid the snow problem.
