"Now that Mike Ditka has indicated he would offer all voters in Illinois a better choice, ABC will immediately gear up its fund-raising and endorsement efforts," said Hug.

The fund-raiser includes supporters who have pledged at least $10,000 to ABC if Mike Ditka becomes the nominee for U.S. senator from Illinois.

527 political organizations, unlike federal campaigns, can take unlimited contributions from individuals or companies, but must run their own campaign, not "coordinating" with the official committee.

"While we need large donors to get the race kicked off," noted Hug, "the coach is truly a man of and from the common people, so we are calling for all Ditka supporters to be at 100 E. Chestnut at 8 p.m. to make their voices heard."

Last week, ABC released a poll taken by 21st Century Campaigns LLC of Chicago. It conducted the poll from July 3 through July 5 over the Internet, taking advantage of its more than 1,500,000-name e-mail list in Illinois.

Steve Denari, CEO of 21st Century, noted that he had not seen such a strong showing for a political outsider since last October, when 21st Century polled in the Arnold Schwarzenegger campaign in California.

The results were as follows:

Mike Ditka 58%
Jim Oberweis 16%
Steve Rauschenberger 12%
Others/Undecided 14%

Being from Illinois, none of this strikes me as terribly weird, it's the way things are. Too funny, I was just going to post this:

Ditkamania: Day Five
Now it's a top story in the major Chicago papers.

For the record, I don't have any idea whether Da Coach would make a good senator, or even candidate, but as promised, Ditkamania is already fun to watch. Check out this exchange of quotes, first from Ditka:

"I am very conservative, and a lot of people aren't going to like that. I am very outspoken and a lot of people aren't going to like that, but that's me. So if they don't like me they vote for the other guy."

... and then from Democratic nominee Barack Obama:

"He would give me pause if I was meeting him on the football field," said Obama, 42. "Even though he is older than me, he looks pretty tough. I can take him on the basketball court. And I'm convinced I can sing 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' better than him."

Sorry, Will, but I just can't stop sniggering. "Ditkamania" sounds too much like a gay porn title.

He passes the first "frank" test. He's not a lawyer, and if there are fewer lawyers making law , that can only be a good thing. If I see one more bespectacled blue suit-white shirt-red tie legal wonk, "a former partner of the famed law firm "Dewey, Cheatham and Howe" run for office, Im just going to choke. Cant we have atleast one motorcycle mechanic run for office?

Serving in the legislature should be like jury duty, you try like hell to avoid it, but when you get called, you do it, and then you get the hell out and back to real life as soon as you can.

Obama vs. Mini-ditka on the basketball court? Mini-ditka wins.

Like with Arnold, people are naive enough to vote for who they recognize as cool in ENTERTAINMENT instead of the best person for the job.

Just like high school.

What a bunch of kids Americans are.

Actually I do believe this to be a sideshow, one Chicago is well known for. Obama is going to win and my guess be the up and coming bright light for the dems very quickly. Smart, good looking, and I do believe Muslim.

So Kathianne, do you think he will be the nominee and if so how will he fair?

Ditka? Oh he'll get some votes, he's pretty active in GOP Illinois. They asked all the regular liklies: Thompson, Edgar, and Topinka, no way were any of them putting themselves out for a suicide run. Ditka can afford to, it's a lark and puts him back in the limelight. In 2000 he appeared at every Bush event I went to, this will put him onstage with GW, he'll like that.

They need to put someone on, so I guess he might well be it.

I dunno. I think Ditka can do it. Alot of Dems in Chicago remember 85. Theyll be nostalgic for Da Coach. Ditka may not be a seasoned politician but as he said he has conservative values and doesn't take shit from anyone. I'd welcome an outsider into the Senate to maybe shake things up a bit.

I think the race will be entertaining regardless. cause I know he isnt going to take crap. He is going to be straight up and honest. A rare occurance for a politician.

But i dont think thats why they voted for Arnold or why they would vote for Ditka. Sure the race will be entertaining, but i think people voted for Arnold and will vote for Ditka because they are sincere. They speak what they think and are willing to lead. And quite frankly we do need a few less lawyers making laws.

I can't remember now the exact numbers, so this is approximate:

I asked more than 100 people who they were voting for. 20% wanted Arnold. 60% wanted McClintock.

When it came time to vote, less than 5 voted for McClintock. The rest knew they were throwing their vote away so they voted for Arnold.

Why?

They said they just liked him.

-From movies or tv.

Explain that one.

2 dynamics: People vote for a face they LIKE from entertainment, and people don't vote who they want because that is "throwing away the vote".

This nation disgusts me that way.

My ex girldfriends brother was a registered Republican in 2000. He said how he was voting for Bush and all. Then after the election he said he voted for Gore. We live in Pa so he said he was throwing his vote away to vote for Bush. It makes no sense.
