Watching ESPN right now. The heroic private sector owner of MLB's Miami Marlins took $500,000,000 (yes, accurate number) of TAXPAYER money to build that stadium. ANd how does he repay the Miami taxpayer? By selling off every player worth a shit to maximize his profits today. They build him a huge stadium. He gives them no chance of enjoying games in it.

Private sector greed at its finest.

A publicly funded stadium for a rich guy to play around in with his privately owned baseball team, and he fields as close to a minor league team as possible to maximize his profits. Gross.

Maybe the Miami taxpayers should have made it a part of the deal that the owner couldn't ever sell off any of the players.

Meh. He didn't sign most of those players until the stadium was completed/almost completed, so it's not like the people of Miami approved the construction because they thought they were going to have a wonderful team.

Point is.......they never should've been asked to build a stadium for a billionaire who wanted to own a baseball team.

The on field stuff is what it is. Thats what coaches are for.

But this is common practice...private owners DEMANDING the taxpayers pay for their stadiums, or else he'll move the team to a city that will.

Heartless bloodsuckers exist in the private sector just as much as the govt sector.

If only the players werent so greedy, illegal immigrants would be able to attend more games........

Just to clarify the owner did not pocket the $500M, it went to the stadium construction, so lots of people made money on that.

Also, the firesale/rebuild model is the one that gave the marlins two world series in the past 20 years, 1997 and 2003. They tried the buy em all model, and it didnt work.

I heard this on Dan Patrick's show this morning, and you are right... if I lived there, I'd be PISSED. Promise a WS ring, take the money, build your stadium, then ship the team off to Canada.

What a fucking scam. Apparently most of these player contracts were written so this could be done.

For one, i guess you missed last offseason when a big story in MLB was the Marlins making some big splashes to open their new stadium and make a run at the pennant. They had Hanley Ramirez and some other good players. They spent a lot of money on Jose Reyes and Mark Buerhle. They also went out and got Ozzie Guillen. The plan was to kick ass and take names and make a playoff run for their fans.

It didn't work out. It happens ever single year in baseball. The White Sox were supposed to be pretty damn good two years ago and weren't. What did they do? Sold off some highly paid assets that were proving to not do the job for lower paid ones to develop and hopefully make a run in the future. It happens every year and has happened to every team other than the Yankess at some point.

If you're bent out of shape about the government of Florida spending $500 million on the stadium then vote them out.

Why is that a problem?
