Why French Kids Don t Have ADHD Psychology Today

"In the United States, at least 9 percent of school-aged children have been diagnosed with ADHD, and are taking pharmaceutical medications. In France, the percentage of kids diagnosed and medicated for ADHD is less than .5 percent. How has the epidemic of ADHD—firmly established in the U.S.—almost completely passed over children in France?

Is ADHD a biological-neurological disorder? Surprisingly, the answer to this question depends on whether you live in France or in the U.S. In the United States, child psychiatrists consider ADHD to be a biological disorder with biological causes. The preferred treatment is also biological—psycho stimulant medications such as Ritalin and Adderall.

French child psychiatrists, on the other hand, view ADHD as a medical condition that has psycho-social and situational causes. Instead of treating children's focusing and behavioral problems with drugs, French doctors prefer to look for the underlying issue that is causing the child distress—not in the child's brain but in the child's social context. They then choose to treat the underlying social context problem with psychotherapy or family counseling. This is a very different way of seeing things from the American tendency to attribute all symptoms to a biological dysfunction such as a chemical imbalance in the child's brain.

French child psychiatrists don't use the same system of classification of childhood emotional problems as American psychiatrists. They do not use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM. According to Sociologist Manuel Vallee, the French Federation of Psychiatry developed an alternative classification system as a resistance to the influence of the DSM-3. This alternative was the CFTMEA (Classification Française des Troubles Mentaux de L'Enfant et de L'Adolescent), first released in 1983, and updated in 1988 and 2000. The focus of CFTMEA is on identifying and addressing the underlying psychosocial causes of children's symptoms, not on finding the best pharmacological bandaids with which to mask symptoms."

Just one instance but a good snapshot at the differences between American and European mental healthcare. We proscribe drugs until the desired suppression of symptoms is observed. Europe doesn't.

I agree - we are way to quick to medicate things like ADHD with drugs and we really know very little about how these drugs effect children long term.

Perhaps 'adhd' Diagnosis is a good way to label a person and then deny them some RIGHTS because of the diagnosis . Also provides a paycheck to the psychiatrist / expurt that probably can't do any meaningful real work . I think that 'ptsd' works that way on some returning USA military people that have had their Gun Rights restricted !!

CULTURAL FACTORS IN PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS

Extremely technical read, but it's about how different cultures define mental illness. As with differences between the US and France when it comes to ADHD. But this is more about schizophrenia.

"Cultural Factors in Schizophrenic Psychoses

In recent decades the influence of culture on symptom profiles, course and outcome of schizophrenic disorders has been demonstrated in systematic comparative research."

And goes on basicly showing how different cultures have different symptoms when schizophrenic, and how cultural differences lead to different issues. Having majored in psychology (but not graduated heh) I thought it was interesting, but I'm quite the propeller head. I don't pretend to have understood all of it, but I could sound out the parts I didn't :)

It has nothing to do with any of that.

It has to do with fluoride consummation during pregnancy.

Neurotoxicity of sodium fluoride in rats

France
Fluoridated salt is available in France,[28] and 3% of the population uses naturally fluoridated water,[4] but the water is not artificially fluoridated.[4][37]

United States
Main article: Water fluoridation in the United States
As of May 2000, 42 of the 50 largest U.S. cities had water fluoridation.[100] In 2010, 66% of all U.S. residents and 74% of U.S. residents with access to community water systems receive fluoridated water.[101] In 2010, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study determined that "40.7% of adolescents aged 12–15 had dental fluorosis [in 1999–2004]".[102] In response, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services together with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are proposing[103] to reduce the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water to the lowest end of the current range, 0.7 milligrams per liter of water (mg/L), from the previous recommended maximum of 1.2 mg/L.[104] This could effectively terminate municipal water fluoridation in areas where fluoride levels from mineral deposits and industrial pollution exceed the new recommendation.[105]

Harvard Says Fluoridated Water is Causing Cognitive Disorders
Harvard had already published a study in 2006 that pointed to fluoride as a ‘developmental neurotoxicant’, and this newer study looks to over 27 additional investigations into the matter via meta nalysis. In the previous study, it was already established that fluoride consumption lowered children’s IQ scores. The left-over from industry, passed off as ‘medicine,’ obstructs brain development, and can cause a full spectrum of serious health issues – from autism to dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, and more.

The study calls the effects from this chemical a ‘silent epidemic’ that mainstream media and many scientific papers have ignored.

Two of the main researchers involved in the study, Philippe Grandjean from HSPH and Philip Landrigan from ISMMS, say that incidences of chemical-related neurodevelopmental disorders have doubled over the past seven years from six to 12
