There probably is no way to stop this smuggling with the resultant abandoned vehicles, so what they are going to need are some car crushers you see in junk yards here that compresses the cars like pancakes.

Cars and other vehicles used for smuggling diesel from Syria, where an ongoing civil war has made control of the Turkey-Syria border more challenging, has turned the Altınözü district of southern Hatay province into a cemetery for cars.

Vehicles used for smuggling fuel are spread across Altınözü and are particularly prevalent in the border villages.

The police have increased the frequency of border inspections in recent months. However, a lack of space for storing seized vehicles in Altınözü is one reason why the district is turning into a car cemetery.

One smuggler, identifying himself as Mehmet C., said it is wiser for them to burn the vehicles used for smuggling than allow security forces to seize them. Among the burned-out cars are some luxury models.

“Smuggling diesel fuel is such a profitable business that a smuggler does not care about their vehicle. They can buy the same [model of] car on the same day and continue their work,” he told Today's Zaman.
