It seems the DOD and/or the Obama administration decided to use the Army Delta force to penetrate an Isis compound in Syria and kill the Isis financial geek and capture his wife instead of using the Navy Seals who usually get the glory assignments. It's kind of strange that there is no outrage in the liberal media about the U.S. Military capturing a civilian woman but that's another story. Personally I think that it is the proper use of the U.S. Military in this case since the mission took place on land but it's possible that there might be a turf fight between the CIA and the Military regarding Isis missions and the Army might have won this round since Seals have been, shall we say, the CIA's little army for the last couple of decades.

You really don't know much about the military, do you?

DELTA has better capabilities in that area.

Teapers try to create a controversy out of everything...aren't you people sick of all of the teaper bullshit?

You may not realize this , but Delta and the SEALS answer to the same people. It's called JOINT Special Operations Command for a reason. When they get tasked with a job, they send in who they see fit, IOW the President doesn't say "send in the SEALS" that isn't his call.

More likely a matter of different skill sets, and Delta's was more in-line with mission requirements. SEALs are who ya call to go in and kill everybody, not take prisoners.

Whoever told you that was fibbing to you.

Luttrell spilled the beans in his book, 'Lone Survivor" The ridiculous notion that Seals refuse to be billoted with regular Troops "because they might spill secrets in their sleep" says it all. Why would there be "secrets" between ground Troops engaged in the same mission? Because they work for different leadership and towards different goals. Army Rangers had to rescue Luttrell after his "secret" mission was thoroughly screwed up. Why were the Seals in the Pakistan mountains looking for Bin Ladin? Because it was a CIA operation and the Military was out of the loop. Why were Navy snipers perched on a rooftop in Iraq? Weren't there any snipers available in Special Forces or the Marines? The answer is that the CIA had it's sticky fingers all over the operation. The CIA is an "intelligence agency" even though it seemed to have missed all the important intelligence in the last quarter century. It has no business supervising ground Troops in secret missions that sometimes get in the way of or conflict with the overall Military mission. The problem is that the current administration seems confused about the purpose of the U.S. Military and shows that it has little confidence in anything but drones and covert operations.

What exactly are you babbling about?

"why would their be secrets between SEALS and regular troops on the same mission?" thoroughly explains that you don't know anything about how the military works.

There is nothing unusual about several elements being involved with a mission and not knowing what the other elements are doing. Soldiers are given the information they need to complete THEIR part of the mission, and nothing more. It's called need to know.

As for the current administration using covert ops and drones, how you coud complain about that is beyond the pale. It's what Bush should have done in Iraq to begin with, a surgical strike to remove Saddam, and done.

I didn't say it, Luttrell said it. If you get your head out of actor R. Lee Ermey's ass you might understand the concept.

I apologize for the R.Lee Ermey crack. My point was that the movie "Full Metal Jacket", which made Ermey a cultural icon, is fiction. The movie loosely based on Luttrell's book is mostly fiction. Vin Diesel might look like everybody's idea of a Seal but he never served in the Military. What we think we know about the Seals and the Military in general is mostly based on Hollywood fiction.

Maybe these military units have a popularity life span, sort of like movie stars or whatever?
They sure seem to come and go.

Again, wrong. The President tells the Joint Chiefs to implement a plan for a specific mission, the Joint Chief hands the assignment to JSOC and JSOC assigns the mission to the unit they feel is best suited to the task.

I am reminded of all the elite units throughout our history including the Green Berets, the Rangers, and my favorite the Iron Brigade or Black Hats.

The Seals displayed their expertise off Somolia in 2007 when they took out the pirates who kidnapped Captain Phillips. It was a beautifully executed mission and a credit to the officers and men who are heirs to the famed UDT teams of WW2. The Somoli pirate plague is a built in mission for the water borne Seals that the Navy keeps cranking out but the missions are limited. The reason a Navy Seal sniper was out of his element and perched on a rooftop in the desert of Iraq is a complicated one and has it's roots in politics rather than the Military. Seals are independent of Army or Marine organizational structure. In other words they don't take orders from the ground Troops. There is no shortage of skilled snipers in either the Rangers or the Marines so why were Navy personnel on rooftops in the freaking desert? The answer is simple and Luttrell 's book confirmed it. The CIA need it's ground intelligence and the Seals were their eyes and ears and trigger fingers. CIA was literally calling the shots on the bad guys. Maybe people have no problem with the CIA directing members of the Military in a combat zone and keeping the Army and Marine leadership out of the loop but it's a dangerous concept.
