As for the charges that were dropped, "dropped charges" =/= "innocent". Newt repeatedly violated one of the laws, but was allowed to plea bargain that one away.

Thanks to the Republican Party, slavery was ended, but not without having to defend itself from a bitter war waged chiefly by racist Democrats in which deciding that wealth gleaned from poor and mistreated blacks was counterproductive and needed to be set aside.
