Neither Bibi nor most Israeli's, for various reasons, really wanted to invade and occupy Gaza. The reasons are also varied for the small but vocal minority that wanted the IDF to do Gaza. Clearly the impending ground assault, like a snowball rolling downhill, had a momentum of its own.
Was it American pressure that stopped Israel or American intercession which allowed Bibi to back off while saving both face and his political skin?

This whole thing was a giant "head fake" by the Israelis, and was planned as a way to decapitate Hamas from participating in an impending strike on Iran. Iran is more isolated than ever. Even Egypt's new Islamist leader Morsi detests the Iranians for helping Assad slaughter 40,000 of his own people. Which is why he sided with Israel, to provide a way out for Hamas. Should Iran put pressure on Hamas to be part of the alliance against Israel, they simply refer them to the "signed truce", and that their hands are tied.

Another brilliant move by the Israelis. They killed 5 birds with one stone.
