It's one thing to surrender to the opposing armies at the time, but to realize one's wrong in order to apologize in a formal and appropriate setting to the victims and their extended families would be a whole different thing altogether in my opinion.

I think it would be an historical event that could show that the German people are truly saddened by the past, and that they are truly a friend and protector of humanity in which is to be first and foremost within this day and age, and within the new German nation.

If not officially apologized, then would it be appropriate as a huge gesture of humanatarian kindness to do so now ?? My thoughts are that the German nation would want to show their humanatarian side in righting the wrongs of the past by officially separating that nation from the past forever and forever more Amen.

These stories are so sad when watching them, but they are needed in order to understand the human condition, and to understand how it can fail so tragically as we have given witness to over the many decades and generation's looking back now.. To be able to say that an entire nation is sorry for such tragic events (regardless of the time involved) could be the most healing thing ever for a nation. Closure is very important in a situation like that, and if that chapter has never truly been closed, then it should be, and it can be.

This is not to suggest any guilt on the German people living today, but rather only a suggestion that something can be done by those living today in order to truly honor and remember those poor people who had suffered so horrifically under the weight of it all during and after their experiences in that situation.

How do you apologize for the worst crime in human history? The question has befuddled generations of post-war Germans, but there was perhaps no politician with a cleaner wartime record to make a public mea culpa than Willy Brandt. As a politically active teenager with the Social Democrats, Brandt fled Germany for Norway in the Third Reich's earliest days in 1933. He returned to Germany after fighting for the Resistance during the war and became chancellor of West Germany in 1969. When a state visit to Poland in December 1970 coincided with a commemoration to the Jewish victims of the Warsaw Ghetto, Brandt joined in and spontaneously dropped to his knees (left). Brandt didn't utter a word . . . and later said in his autobiography, that upon "carrying the burden of the millions who were murdered, I did what people do when words fail them." Germany has since paid out billions to Israel and to Jewish survivors.

Top 10 National Apologies - TIME

Yes. Germany's response to its war crimes has been largely lauded by the former Allies. The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany until 1990) offered official apologies for Germany's role in the Holocaust. Additionally, German leaders have continuously expressed repentance, most notably when former Chancellor Willy Brandt fell on his knees in front of a Holocaust memorial in the Warsaw Ghetto, also known as the Warschauer Kniefall in 1970. Germany has also paid extensive reparations, including nearly $70 billion to the state of Israel. It has given $15 billion to Holocaust survivors and will continue to compensate them until 2015. Additionally, the government of Germany coordinated an effort to reach a settlement with German companies that had used slave labor during the war; the companies will pay $1.7 billion to victims. Germany also established a National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Berlin for looted property.

Did germany ever make a formal apologie for the holocaust?

They are sourcing that out to us citizens.

Not the government bears any responsibility but we citizens. Actually, whether the government nor the people can bear any responsibility for something it wasn´t involved in. So keep your accusations for yourself and maybe you open your eyes for the millions murdered by your gov.
Wasn't suggesting that the government of today's Germany had anything to do with the past, but that the same government in which is having to deal with the constant fall out from the past, could infact end the connections thought of by those whom think that it still does have some sort of connection (if were to formerly apologize to the survivors and their extended families for such a horrendous time period in which it took an entire government action to commit)..... It would be a great day forward in Germany from that past.

Otherwise why not be an example to the world that the German government will never stand for the abuses of human beings by way of a government action such as that to ever happen again ?? What could it hurt, and what could be accomplished maybe ??

Jake, correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't Germany adopt a no q's asked immigration policy as 'apology' to the world ?

~S~
Hmm, not the same thing, and that is another subject unassociated with the thread and video submitted here. Open borders is still a very dangerous and ignorant thing, because it is abusive in nature to have such a thing if are a sovierign nation with a strong culture of people inside the borders.

We have plenty of memorials, TV shows and the curriculum. Wherever you go, even on the sidewalk, you are reminded of "your" crimes. If you turn on TV, you get a 50 % chance that Adolf is there. I don´t know how many times our officials apologized.
It is time for a final stroke. Nobody is demanding a US apology for the things of the past. Nobody is judging the entire country for a thing in the past.

Thanks for the history lesson Jake... Good stuff... Now did the people ever truly except the apology or is it something that is never ending like we see in this country pertaining to slavery ?? After all that has been done by Germany found in your study, are the Jewish people or others still vengeful in their hearts or have they been satisfied in putting the past behind them, and moving on to not let it ever keep them down again in life ?? I think they've moved on myself. Good for them and the new generations of Germans and the Jews.

Understood... Nothing wrong with apologies if have done wrong, and maybe we should do a formal apology as well in a final stroke, and then end it. To many abuses by allowing something to just linger on and on and on into infinity.

They don´t want a final stroke, I guess.

They want to keep painting the picture as blue as they can.. That's their final stroke, but what will their picture look like in the end ??

Like a Miró, I guess. Antisemitism is on the rise. Immigrants often use "Heil Hitler" and media and politics will claim it was German Nazis. This was revealed by a Jewish official in the news. Today, another attack on a Jew happened in Berlin, see the Europe subforum soon.

many. many Germans did not like hitler or the nazis
many tried to get rid of hitler/help the Allies/etc --and paid with their lives
they did not want what happened to happen
...no need to apologize ...the German people/country as a whole did not implement the wrongs
...they received their punishment in cities demolished/people killed/displaced/sufferings/raped/etc
