The four Democrats who have said they will vote for Alito are Sens. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Kent Conrad of North Dakota. All four represent states Bush carried in both 2000 and 2004.

Those Senators in the red states knew it was political suicide to oppose the Alito vote.

Yeah, I can't remember when, but Rush pointed out that he was drooling so much over this thing he wanted to blab about that he actually decided to stay sober long enough to blab about it. What Rush pointed out was the distinctive lack of a drunken slur in his speech.

I noticed Byrd, as well as Clinton and a couple of others, actually passed on the vote, at least the first time around. I figured it was a political move so they couldn't be accused of casting a deciding vote or something.
