Dictionary banned from school

Do you suggest age appropriate bibles as well?

Wait are you saying they should start hading out bibles in public school? If you think that me and you are going to have some serious issues

Or are you just tossing fish at me again?
They always had bibles in school libraries.

They didn't in yours?

Nope. No religious texts at all that I ever found. Im from Massachussetts and went to our public schools.

When I was a teenager, my father and I got into a discussion about whether they had bibles in the public schools. He insisted they didn't (yeah, he used to subscribe to Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority report. ) I took it upon myself to call up about 20 public schools and asked them if they had it in the library.

Every single one did. (that was some of the genesis of my Search for Truth addiction).

About 5-6 years ago, I was in another discussion with someone, and told that story...and they said yeah, but I bet they are not there now.

I called again. Every public school library had a bible./

Maybe you just never went to the library much PP.

I'm gonna call my school in the AM and find out and tell you what they say. Maybe I just never saw it.

fear of knowledge is a terrible thing.

So many people have no idea how to talk to their children about difficult subjects. They then think keeping their children stupid is the answer to their inability.

Don't be a fucking pervert. You don't talk to 5 year old's about oral sex.

This was a "talking" dictionary? Did the dictionary direct children towards a definition of oral sex?

What is the point of sending children to school? They are curious. That is not a bad thing. If a parent is concerned about what a child is learning then it is thier responsibility to talk to thier kids and address them on issues such as sex to keep thier family values intact. It is not the schools job to dumb down education or access to information to satisfy parents that are regressive in thier approach to life and learning. Home schooling is probably more appropriate in some cases than assuming all of society should bend to favor small minded people.

ASSOCIATED PRESS: A Southern California school district has pulled dictionaries from classrooms because a parent complained when a child came across the term "oral sex."

District officials said Friday that the Menifee Union School District—which serves 9,000 kindergartners through eight graders in Riverside County—is forming a committee to consider a permanent classroom ban of the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

A memo from Assistant Superintendent Karen Valdes acknowledged it is a respected resource but district officials found that "a number of referenced words are age-inappropriate."

School officials will review the dictionary to decide if it should be permanently banned because of the "sexually graphic" entry, district spokeswoman Betti Cadmus told The Press-Enterprise. "It's just not age appropriate.''

:mad: Excuse!!!ME!!! they did what? Somebody has their mind in the gutter. There, are many other words in the English Dictionary, besides just Oral Sex.What a dingy Broad!!!!:cuckoo:. That is a very important book, and it educates everyone in this country, those who choose to read it and learn.

That's strange. They were in my school library, in the reference section.

The suspense is killing me...is oral sex, sex????

I'm for age appropriate material, unless otherwise decided by the local PTA.

I'm guilty of federalism yes and I'm not sorry :D
Age appropriate? It is a dictionary, and people wonder why we have children you still can't read. And the PTA shouldn't be able to decide anything, that is not their job. Their job is to plan a cupcake sale, it is up to the board of education to decide in these matters.

If I dont want my 13 year old being taught about and reading about Oral sex in my PUBLIC school I have the right as a concerned parent and member of the PTA to have such material excluded from the school system.

In the same vein of thought if I do want the school teaching my 13 year old about it I should have the right as a concerned parent and member of the PTA to have such material included in the school system.

The PTA's job is to raise money through bake sales? Is that honestly your position? As far as we are concerned in my state the PTAs job is to decide on what the education our children are going to receive shall consist of along with ANYTHING else related to the school and its activities (including bake sales yes)

As far as your claims of illiteracy, please keep the red herrings away from arguments with me

And I thought liberals were for censorship.
Trust me a 13 year old will be learning about oral sex, and it won't be from dictionary. It is like some people forget what school was really like. I am sorry, I can't believe people would actually want to ban the dictionary in their school, you can't shelter your kids forever. And I think " Is Oral sex, the Goodnight Kiss" thread is proof sheltering your children doesn't always work, notice at the bottom of the article where it meantioned most of the children were from good families. I really liked the part where it said most of their parents had no clue about was going on.
