Looters strip Gaza greenhouses
Facilities seen as key to Palestinians’ rebuilding of area vacated by Israelis

NEVE DEKALIM, Gaza Strip - Palestinians looted dozens of greenhouses on Tuesday, walking off with irrigation hoses, water pumps and plastic sheeting in a blow to fledgling efforts to reconstruct the Gaza Strip.

American Jewish donors had bought more than 3,000 greenhouses from Israeli settlers in Gaza for $14 million last month and transferred them to the Palestinian Authority. Former World Bank President James Wolfensohn, who brokered the deal, put up $500,000 of his own cash.

Palestinian police stood by helplessly Tuesday as looters carted off materials from greenhouses in several settlements, and commanders complained they did not have enough manpower to protect the prized assets. In some instances, there was no security and in others, police even joined the looters, witnesses said.

“We need at least another 70 soldiers. This is just a joke,” said Taysir Haddad, one of 22 security guards assigned to Neve Dekalim, formerly the largest Jewish settlement in Gaza. “We’ve tried to stop as many people as we can, but they’re like locusts.”

The failure of the security forces to prevent scavenging and looting in the settlements after Israel’s troop pullout Monday raised new concerns about Gaza’s future.

‘We are not going to tolerate chaos’
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told his people in a televised speech Tuesday that he would take immediate steps to impose order. “We have one law for everyone and no one is above the law. We are not going to tolerate chaos after today,” he said.

The Palestinian leader is under intense pressure from his people and the international community to stop the growing lawlessness in Gaza, where rival militant groups are jockeying for power. As Abbas spoke, hundreds of masked Hamas gunmen wielding rifles and grenade launchers paraded through the streets of a nearby refugee camp.

The greenhouses are a centerpiece of Palestinian plans for rebuilding Gaza after 38 years of Israeli occupation. The Palestinian Authority hopes the high-tech greenhouses left by the Israelis will provide jobs and export income for Gaza’s shattered economy.

During a tour of Neve Dekalim, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia implored Palestinians to leave the structures intact. “These greenhouses are for the Palestinian people,” he said. “We don’t want anyone to touch or harm anything that can be useful for our people.”

Jihad al-Wazir, the deputy Palestinian finance minister, said roughly 30 percent of the greenhouses suffered various degrees of damage. He said that after a “very heated meeting” with Qureia and other Palestinian leaders, the security forces appeared to be getting the situation under control.

“We expect the security to protect the assets properly,” he said...

Looks like they are earning the Israeli cliche that "palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity". I can just see that the people looting and destroying these greenhouses now are going to come back in a few months complaining about how they have no jobs and that the Jews are to blame.

Muslim Thugs Loot Gaza
By Dave Gibson (09/15/05)

The Israeli military pulled out of Gaza on Tuesday, thus completing the Israeli withdrawal from that region. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon offered an olive branch to the Palestinians and they showed their appreciation by beginning an orgy of looting, vandalism, and arson. Basically, they proved to the world once again that they are nothing more than savages and deserve to be treated as such.

The Israeli settlers in Gaza built greenhouses, in which they grew vegetables and flowers for sale in Europe. Private homes, synagogues, and schools dotted the one-time wasteland. They turned the barren landscape into a viable, highly-functioning community. That is all gone now.

The Palestinians stripped the greenhouses of their air-conditioning systems, hoses, and even the plastic sheeting. They have stripped homes of windows and doors. They even burned the synagogues. The Muslim thugs went on a rampage that would make the looters of New Orleans jealous.

The story has been barely reported by the mainstream press. The liberal media is always anxious to put a good face on Islam, and obviously such news does not fit into that fantasy.

The Palestinian Authority's police have stood by and allowed the Muslim criminals to cart-away electronics, destroy schools, and deface Jewish religious symbols. Sound familiar?

What took Jewish settlers 38 years to build and nourish--Muslims will destroy in only a few days. Undoubtedly, Gaza under Muslim control will now return to an uninviting, useless parcel of land. These people cannot create, they can only destroy.

Another (international this time) example proving that the welfare state is only a few dollars away from chaos. Throwing money and services at poverty is a dismal failure world wide.Thousands of people from New Orleans have been GIVEN more assets than they have ever had in the last 10 years. The only question is when they will run out and need more.
As long as personal responsiblilty is omitted from the equation of solving poverty realted problems it will be impossible for things to improve. Most of those that have been relocated will shortly return to the type of life style they are accustomed to and the responsiblity for their welfare will simply shift from one state to another. They is already a backlash in many local comminuties who are seeing the needs of thier OWN local poor tkae back seat to those coming from LA and the fight over federal money is bound to be a bitter one.
