Device could bring both solar power and clean water to millions

A device that can produce electricity from sunlight while simultaneously purifying water has been produced by researchers, an invention they say could solve two problems in one stroke.

The researchers say the device is not only a source of green energy but also offers an alternative to current technologies for purifying water. These, they add, often consume large amounts of electricity and require infrastructure beyond the reach of many communities that lack basic access to safe drinking water – a situation thought to affect more than 780 million people worldwide.

Surely we can all agree that this is a good thing.

Meh it only desalinates salt water. It is only limited in its usefulness to shorelines.

Absolutely. if they can get it to work that would be a truly great thing.

Surely we can, yet wags here will bend over backward to find ways not to.

Oh I see a couple already have. The typical "will never work" wankers.

I didnt mention it but I understand it only comes in one colour. Massive downside.

Trust me, if it works the cost would be next to nil as it got scaled up for production. And who cares anyway. 780 million people, able to work better because they aren't sick would ultimately pay for them anyway.

Hardly anyone in the world lives on shorelines.

Hate to tell both of you, but 40 percent of the world population is within 100 k. of coastal shoreline.

For a country like Saudi it could be transforming.

Not really, Saudi Arabia already has the most extensive desal plants in the world. Africa, and India, is where this would be revolutionary

On my cable provider, there is a channel called "create" that shows all sorts of "do it yourself" stuff, or cooking shows, or other alternative programming.

On one of those shows, they were taking a tour of a brewery in FL. One of the things that made it so interesting is that they had those devices to make water from the air. The really cool thing about it was that the water they got from the air didn't have any minerals in it, and if they wanted to, they could duplicate water from any where on the planet, simply by adding certain minerals to the water they extracted from the air.

They said that was one of the reasons their German style beer was so good. They made it with water that was a mineral match for what it was in Germany.

Better beer is a noble cause.

They need water in England so they can stop stealing ours.

The coolest part was that the brewery extracted all water that they used from the air, they weren't connected in any way to the local water system.

Will depend on one thing and one thing only s0n...............the cost.:2up:

Why do you think solar/wind power is still fringe after 25 years. The cost. Its astronomically high compared to fossil fuels. The only things that matters to world governments is the cost.
