Sad to see the decline of a once great city
Detroit, at one time symbolized American greatness. With the decline in dominance of the American auto industry and the dispersion of auto manufacturing to less expensive areas, I doubt if Detroit will ever return to its former greatness
They have to downsize the city. Demolish what once was and concentrate on a manageable city center and try to attract new industries.
They need a powerful city planner to rescope their future...I wish them luck

I never questioned the wisdom of moving to lower cost states. I used it as a justification for Detroit needing to reinvent themselves because those jobs aren't coming back.

You are right.
Detroit should reinvent itself as:
Lower corporate tax rates to attract business back.
Lower local taxes on the rich to attract wealthy home-buyers and fill in some vacant spots. This will produde additional sales tax just by their presence, and maybe boost some local businesses, also boosting tax income to Detroit.
Cut union labor. Become non-union. Labor costs will drop, and bring in more business, and jobs will become more available.
Cut union labor. The lack of union contracts will allow them to payout less in pensions, and get rid of lazy workers. That will make workers more productive, and thus, the company more competitive. That will make the company more profitable, they can expand, give raises, etc, etc, etc.
That would work for Detroit. What Detroit was doing didn't work.
Notice our Federal Government is now behaving exactly how Detroit has, and is refusing to behave in any of the ways that could save Detroit.
Do we want our federal government to go the way of the Detroit local government????
