Destroying children with the cloak of ADHD - Parents need to pay attention

Good read and I am glad I read it because the idiots at my son's school says he has ADHD and want him on drugs...nah...not gonna happen...I can fix this problem with a much easier and safer way.

Have your son evaluated by a specialist in Autistic Spectrum Disorders. The school might even pay for it, like my sons did back in 4th grade. We though ADHA at first, but it turned out to be Aspergers. No drugs, but social skills classes and a lot of support in curriculum has made a huge difference. His social skills are better, and he's in an advanced math class this year... 8th grade level while he's in 7th.

And yes, unless it's the only option, stay away from the drugs if at all possible.

ADHD is one of the biggest scams going... schools push it because putting the kids on drugs makes their jobs easier. You know you're in trouble when there is really no test for ADHD... they just eliminate various other things and then say, "well, it must be ADHD".... have an Adderall kid.

Diet can go a long way toward mitigating behavioral problems. However, there are some people who just aren't wired right who require professional intervention. If a child is suffering, I would seek professional help. You can always decline drugs, but you may find some therapies are efficacious.

Don't make your child pay the penalty for your irrational fears.

ADHD was always one of my pet peeves, as well. Better living through drugs, dontcha know!

When I was in the military, so many of the spouses were claiming bragging rights about how large a dosage their darlings required, how long it took doctors to determine the dosage required, etc. It was like some kind of competition. I do like the suggestion that diet be looked at before committing your child to a life drugged out of their right minds.
Seems like we had a lot less of this type of "problem" when I was a kid. Of course, my mother couldn't afford those fancy-schmancy, easy-to-prepare packaged foods. She bought basics and prepared meals from scratch. If we acted up in school, if the teacher didn't whip your ass, your Dad (sometimes Mom) sure as hell did. We did chores when we came home from school, then homework. Free time was spent outside, running around in the woods and the neighborhood with lots of other kids. No squatting for interminable hours in front of a computer, gameboy, or TV. Life has changed a whole bunch and I don't see how it's for the better, either.

Why make your child pay for your failure to be a proper parent. Doping kids is a cheater's way out of doing the tough job of being a real parent.

We know from the fine print on the TV ads that the behavior modification drug companies are required to disclose that mood altering drugs sometimes cause thoughts of suicide (or murder?)> I think the Columbine shooters were on behavior altering drugs administered by the school. Union teachers and nurses who couldn't get a job anywhere else are recommending dangerous drugs be administered to kids at the most dangerous time of their lives because it's easier to supervise a classroom full of zombies.

I am not advocating drugs. I plainly said you can refuse drugs, but that other treatment or intervention may be necessary.

This is especially true if the behavior problems are the result of abuse.

I would submit that many children with behavioral disorders have abusive or negligent parents.

That's what I am doing for my son. I got some books coming that discuss how to go about figuring out what he is eating that's doing this...I took him off the drugs and he had vitamins this morning and so far so good...My wife didn't understand why the doc ordered a drug for our son when the doc said himself he had a deficiency of zinc in his body...so I went and got a multivitamin chewable with zinc in it...I had to explain why the doc would have ordered him a drug...I guess I am just a cynic and realized WHY he had done it...Maybe this is why NONE of the drugs I was given as a kid worked...It was the food I was eating and drink I was drinking but no one wanted to work hard and figure out what was wrong with me...

you bring up a good point when I was a youth counselor we would get kids that would be on drugs that would contradict each other. The kid was being whip sawed by the drugs he was on.
the first thing we would to is make our diagnosis and then put the kid on the appropriate treatment. Our overall attitude was less is better.....but
there was always those supervisors who thought more was better.
I like you was not a big fan of psychotropic drugs

I would agree with you about the parent issue. Those children have behavioral problems that woud be better served using some other method than drugs, though. I believe that individuals who are truly in need of drug intervention are rare. But drugs are 1) an easy way out for parents, teachers, others who interact with children, and 2) pushed massively by big pharma and their bought minions in government.
Too bad we can't require licensing in order to become parents.

Uncle Ferd thinks a lot of ADHD is merely parents raisin' undisciplined kids...

Use of ADHD drugs 'increases by 50% in six years'
12 August 2013 > There has been a 50% rise in the use of drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in six years.
Prescriptions for methylphenidate drugs, including Ritalin, rose from 420,000 in 2007 to 657,000 last year, the Care Quality Commission said. The watchdog warned health workers to "carefully monitor" their use as they have the potential to be "abused". The drugs are one of a number linked to the "smart-drug" craze, where students take medication to help them focus. Methylphenidate is known as a psychostimulant.

Common symptoms of ADHD include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness

While it is not completely clear how it works, it is thought to stimulate a part of the brain that changes mental and behavioural reactions. The CQC report - its annual review of controlled drugs - said the number of prescriptions for such medications rose by 11% between 2011 and 2012.

Impulsiveness

The commission said: "As in previous years, we believe that this reflects increased diagnosis of, and prescribing for, the treatment of ADHD. "We are also aware of the possibility that methylphenidate could be diverted and abused, and for this reason we recommend that its use should be monitored carefully."

Common symptoms of ADHD include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Symptoms tend to be first noticed at an early age and it is normally diagnosed between the ages of three and seven. It is estimated that the condition affects 2% to 5% of school children and young people. However, it can be a lifelong condition and many people continue to show symptoms in adulthood.

The worst, most damaging drug dealers in America aren't in the ghettos. They are in the suburbs....and call themselves "Doctor".

Overmedication via prescription pills are the worst drug related crime in America.

Good diet, nutrition and exercise are FREE.

Pills are EXPENSIVE.

No wonder the medical lobby and doctors pick the $$$ option over the FREE option.

My son is on Vyvance a form of adderal but he does not have ADHD.. He just cant focus.. He also did not get it until his senior year of highschool when his grades dropped . He told me he could not focus. Took him to his dr he gave him this and now on graduation day he had a 4.9. YEP higher then a 4.0 due to taking college classes in senior year. Entering college he has made the dean list. He ONLY takes it when he has school. He has a bottle he filled last april that was his last fill and he had a few left in his old bottle. Guess what he has not touched that bottle since he is NOT In school and doesnt need it for just regular day life. This is how it should be used not just to get all kids to obey their teachers..
