Have your son evaluated by a specialist in Autistic Spectrum Disorders. The school might even pay for it, like my sons did back in 4th grade. We though ADHA at first, but it turned out to be Aspergers. No drugs, but social skills classes and a lot of support in curriculum has made a huge difference. His social skills are better, and he's in an advanced math class this year... 8th grade level while he's in 7th.

And yes, unless it's the only option, stay away from the drugs if at all possible.

ADHD is one of the biggest scams going... schools push it because putting the kids on drugs makes their jobs easier. You know you're in trouble when there is really no test for ADHD... they just eliminate various other things and then say, "well, it must be ADHD".... have an Adderall kid.

Diet can go a long way toward mitigating behavioral problems. However, there are some people who just aren't wired right who require professional intervention. If a child is suffering, I would seek professional help. You can always decline drugs, but you may find some therapies are efficacious.

Don't make your child pay the penalty for your irrational fears.

ADHD was always one of my pet peeves, as well. Better living through drugs, dontcha know!

When I was in the military, so many of the spouses were claiming bragging rights about how large a dosage their darlings required, how long it took doctors to determine the dosage required, etc. It was like some kind of competition. I do like the suggestion that diet be looked at before committing your child to a life drugged out of their right minds.
Seems like we had a lot less of this type of "problem" when I was a kid. Of course, my mother couldn't afford those fancy-schmancy, easy-to-prepare packaged foods. She bought basics and prepared meals from scratch. If we acted up in school, if the teacher didn't whip your ass, your Dad (sometimes Mom) sure as hell did. We did chores when we came home from school, then homework. Free time was spent outside, running around in the woods and the neighborhood with lots of other kids. No squatting for interminable hours in front of a computer, gameboy, or TV. Life has changed a whole bunch and I don't see how it's for the better, either.

Why make your child pay for your failure to be a proper parent. Doping kids is a cheater's way out of doing the tough job of being a real parent.

We know from the fine print on the TV ads that the behavior modification drug companies are required to disclose that mood altering drugs sometimes cause thoughts of suicide (or murder?)> I think the Columbine shooters were on behavior altering drugs administered by the school. Union teachers and nurses who couldn't get a job anywhere else are recommending dangerous drugs be administered to kids at the most dangerous time of their lives because it's easier to supervise a classroom full of zombies.

I am not advocating drugs. I plainly said you can refuse drugs, but that other treatment or intervention may be necessary.

This is especially true if the behavior problems are the result of abuse.

I would submit that many children with behavioral disorders have abusive or negligent parents.
