Desperate Americans Begin To Turn Houses in To Restaurants

Way back in the Depression hit 1930s, a certain Walter Knott, in order to feed his family bought some land, and grew some berries (boysenberries to be precise)... his wife then started making the berries into jams... then they opened a restaurant in their home.

Today, that business is Knotts Berry Farm in California. It is a favorite childhood memory for many of my fellow Californians. Desperate times breeds entrepreneurship and creativity. Americans are at their best when times are hard.

The wingnut fetish for suffering. Let's make America more like it was during the Depression so we can all have more FUN!!!!

Compliments of the economy busting socialist agenda of the spend, spend, spend like the wind idiot left.

I love that these are the same type of people who were blaming Clinton for the recession Bush had early in his first term.

I'm actually in favor of that kind of downsizing. I've reached the point where I hardly dare eat processed food anymore because of what might be lurking in it. Plus, it's full of potentially harmful preservatives. I read somewhere recently about someone finding a package of Twinkies in someone's garage that hadn't been opened, had a sell-by date of about 12 years ago, and they were still soft. I'll take my mother's homemade donuts any day over garbage like that. She could have sold them from the back porch and bought our new school clothes every year with the profits.

What's wrong with Twinkies?

...shut off water to the large farms in CA that provides not only jobs but much needed food, for a the FUCKING Smelt! Fucking Nancy "Fucking" Pelosi!

Water shut off to California farms because of endangered fish!

So what's the status of that? It's a very old issue. I thought it had been appealed and was back in the court's jurisdiction.

The evironazis still are having their way. Lush farm land remains unused. Whole communities remain out of work. Private land owners can't use their land to help provide food from the entire country. For what, the god damn smelt!

that whooshing sound is the point going over your head.

Funny how these people dont realise that small business and individual innovation here in America is what the BIG BOX stores helped to run out of business a few years back. Many of these people here cheered it while it happened.

Yeah, none of it had anything to do with stifling regulations that the smaller businesses simply couldn't afford to conform to.

This is a good example of why sceintists are liberals instead of republicans, its called ALL the information instead of stupid fucking soundbites from idiots.

Let me get this straight a back-water-blogger would get this right over even the most liberal mainstream newspapers? OK!

Here are the facts, farms and farmers for DECADES have been getting water to irrigate their field and grow food, liberals environazis, lead by NANCY PELOSI, have stopped the much needed water and the REASON given is to protect the smelt. A tiny fish that is not commercially fished by anyone, nor can it be. These are the facts! 1000s of job have been lost, many family farms have been foreclosured and many large scale corporate farming employers have gone under (meaning the little guys - the workers bees have lost their jobs). This is a tradegy and only libtards could support it or defend it!

So true, it seems like the only country in Europe that is not suffering is Germany. A country that is striving to be less like socialist Europe and more business, regulation and tax friendly!

Do you have a current link? I couldn't find one. I find it hard to believe that the situation is as dire as you imply when produce on the shelves in New England which came from California acreage is still the same price, or cheaper, than even five years ago. As I recall, the water distribution situation in California was ALWAYS a huge issue, which is why I've paid little attention to this latest battle.

Like what?

One of my college friends is part of a generational family business involved in home construction, improvement, building supplies, and home decorating. It's probably the largest privately owned "small business" of its kind in Southern Vermont, but the family was extremely worried when Home Depot had plans to move into the neighborhood. And those worries ONLY concerned potential loss of customers because of the lower prices that big box stores can offer due to volume. There was never, ever any concern in all their 75 years of operation over any "regulations" imposed by the government (or the state, for that matter). You see most smart business owners fully recognize that taxes, licenses, permits, etc., are all part of "doing business" (most of which they can write off anyway) and they don't run around bitching and moaning about it.

Actually, they're not.

What Europe gets for its taxes
Europeans pay higher taxes than do Americans, but for their money, they get a vast array of services that in the U.S., we must pay a major chunk of our incomes to match, said Steven Hill in The Sacramento Bee.

Steven Hill
The Sacramento Bee

When Americans complain about taxes, said Steven Hill, they often point to Europe as the ultimate nightmare. But people in “socialist” countries like Sweden are hardly “overtaxed serfs.” Yes, Europeans pay higher taxes than do Americans, but for their money, they get a vast array of services that in the U.S., we must pay a major chunk of our incomes to match. The $200,000 Americans pay for college educations? In most European nations, university educations are free, or very cheap. All that money you’re stuffing into your 401(k), because Social Security payments are so anemic? In Europe, pensions provide more than 75 percent of what people need in retirement. Your soaring health-care premiums? In Europe, health care is available to all without charge, and the average cost per person is half that in the U.S. Child care, senior care, state-of-the-art mass transportation—all are provided without additional charges, in return for the Europeans’ taxes. The reality is that when you include our out-of-pocket expenses for essential services, “Americans pay out just as much as Europeans—but receive a lot less for our money.”

Germany is getting back on track by cutting spending AND recently raised taxes. The conservatives here only want to cut spending. Next?

You can't do that nowadays in CA, because the libtards want to save the smelt and kill the farmers! No water for you!
Aren't the smelt a vital link in the food chain for some other species that we care about?
