Benefit spending soars to new high - USATODAY.com

The recession is driving the safety net of government benefits to a historic high, as one of every six dollars of Americans' income is now coming in the form of a federal or state check or voucher.

Benefits, such as Social Security, food stamps, unemployment insurance and health care, accounted for 16.2% of personal income in the first quarter of 2009, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports. That's the highest percentage since the government began compiling records in 1929.

In all, government spending on benefits will top $2 trillion in 2009 — an average of $17,000 provided to each U.S. household, federal data show. Benefits rose at a 19% annual rate in the first quarter compared to the last three months of 2008.

Well, who would've thought that? Americans are now more dependent on the government than ever before.

Economic freedom is rapidly becoming old-fashioned it seems.

No worries--Obama's volunteer corps will fix everything for free.

Yeah, "free" until the Chinese get tired of lending us "money".

When that happens, the bill arrives not in Washington, but in the mailboxes of every American who dares to make a living independent of the government.

Much MUCH greater than in 1929.

In '29 there was no unemployment insurance, no social security, no heating assistance, no welfare, no food stamps, either.

In the years following '29 whole cities of displaced unemployed indigent people living in tents and shacks sprang up. There were hundreds of these canvas and tin slums and millions of Americans living in them

They were call Hoovervilles.

Damned right Americans are more reliant on our government and hat's off to the government for being there for them, too.

The government does not have a business that earns money. The only way they can get money is to either tax the public, or print money without any gold standard to back it up, or borrow from foreign countries. That is what is happening today. The government is taxing the population to pay for these socialistic programs and is printing and borrowing money that it can't possibly hope to pay for. Is that what you are supporting? If so, you are one real dumb ass just like most blind liberals. Do you have a budget at your home? How far in debt are you, and if you are in debt, how do you expect to get out of debt? Oh, you will just let your kids inherit it, huh? Well, that is the irrational an irresponsible mindset and action that our present Obama led government is heaping onto the American people.

That you would let people starve to death in a shitty ass economy rather than *gasp* the richest government in the world help them is fucking disgusting.

It is fascinating how the liberal mind will worry over giving up basic American freedoms in the name of national security, but in the same moment, argue for giving up many of those same freedoms in the name of "government assistance".

Thomas Jefferson would be terribly dissapointed with your inarticulate attempt at big government rationalization...

A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take from you everything you have.

The liberal mind seems to think that money comes from a government source that we don't know about. I would really like to bitch slap every liberal into realization that the money our government spends comes directly from the pockets of the American people that it says it represents, or it is borrowed from foreign countries, or is printed without legal authority to do so.

Oh? Exactly what freedoms are we losing by having a safety net? The freedom to starve to death if we lose our jobs cause the economy is tanking?

Oh noes. So you can't buy that second car so as to save some poor Americans from starving to death. I feel so sorry for you. Let me cry some big crocodile tears for you.

"Probably both are true"?

To be exact, the Debt now stands at $11,033,157,578,669.78.

National Debt Hits Record $11 Trillion | Political Hotsheet - CBS News

Our government has absolutely no money left. In fact, they're not only broke, they're indebted to the extend of $11 trillion!

There's no value in the dollar anymore. The only reason it's "worth" anything is because other nations value it.

If China were to ever dismiss the dollar as a worthless currency we would watch the dollar crash to a value not seen in a major industrialized nation since the collapse of the Soviet Union and their currency the Ruble.

We cannot spend anymore money on your precious entitlement programs.

Want to know the worst thing about this dependency/enabling relationship is that they are working to make those who need it never be able to get a fresh start as well as reward those who take advantage of the system. When I was stuck in the system I had to work my ass off and rely on private organizations to get a hand up when I was finally in the right mind again.

You know you have a point but hey if the government/congress and law enforcement refuses to insure protection to the people they represent this is where it is headed or worse. Actually we are already there.

I could care less at this point how many entitlement programs I receive from taxpayer funds. I have a very good reason for that. When my government failed to provide justice to rod and I it bought our care as far as I am concerned. When they raided our home and left us with absolutely no means of self support they bought us old people. We paid our taxes and we paid our fair share. I was an independent and that was no good I suppose because the law did not apply to the large corporations that took me out. My husband also ran an independent business. It was not good enough to run me out of business through illegal measures they took his business also. They were above the law as they sent the sheriff into our home to raid and vandalize it and had the sheriff steal his heavy equipment. The state employees were above the law as they purposely and intentionally attempted to keep me from operating my mining operation. The people that blew up my equipment were allowed to get off scott free and never had to pay a dime for the damage they did as WF took that law suit and had it dismissed. They have yet to ever fully account for the loan they claimed was fully dispersed that was never fully dispersed as they interfered with my business. I'm told that is not legal but what the heck nothing they did was legal from a legal stand point but that did not stop them.

Monopoly corporates own this country and the people and their representatives allowed it to happen. I would call it more of a National Socialist party (Nationalsozialismus) that we currently have. Bought on credit troopers who use other peoples money to gain full control and power. They have law enforcement to attend to their every whim and judges that ignore evidence, testimony and the law. They have it and they sure don't plan on giving it up.
