Dems push for Internet Sales Tax

Going to be a pain to collect it and pay the states what they believe they are owed.

Many internet retailers haven't got a clue where their customers are.

My site doesn't, for example, since its customers pay via PayPal.

They'll find a way, however.

They always do.

For physical goods, there is a ship to address. It's pretty danged easy to assess the tax on the ship to address.

I'm not advocating for this tax, btw.

I would imagine, as immie said, anything used and being resold is not taxable, because the tax was already paid previously by someone.

As far as thousands of new items being sold on places on the net, they will have to set up their system similar to buying from any retailer that operates in every state....like Sears or jcpenney....off the net purchases are charged the sales tax for the state the person is buying it, is from....it's a simple computer program.

and yes, I agree they have a spending problem and States should cut their own spending as well....

BY LAW anything that you purchase from another State, tax free, you ARE SUPPOSE to claim this on your Income taxes for your state and pay your State sales taxes on it.

Most people IGNORE the law on this.....and they get away with not paying their state the sales taxes on their purchases owed to the State.

As far as, what power does the federal government have to enforce State laws.....

this, I don't know....I would have to do further reading on it....

Of course if you live in a state that does not have State Income Taxes...

Is it on the irs form that you have to claim such or a state income tax form? I can't remember at this point? If it is on the irs form, then the federal government is already enforcing state sales* tax law and I would presume that means that they can legally enforce state laws?? that was a question by someone earlier...does the gvt have the power to enforce state laws?

I believe it is some states. I do not know about ALL states with income taxes.

It is not (to my knowledge) on form 1040, Federal Income Taxes.

just did a quick google, looks like it is the State income tax forms where this has to be declared and paid.

Wonder how the State of florida, texas etc. could "get" theirs, with no income taxes????

We were audited for sales tax this year. The documents they required filled half my kitchen. The auditor found a 400 dollar discrepancy from 05 after spending a week perusing the material. Hmmmm. How much did he make vs.how much he collected?

We are a tiny little business. Multiple that scenario times a million. How many auditors will they need?

For the past several years, it seems that my company has always had some sort of sales and use tax audit underway in one state or another. More often than not, the auditor is an untrained, unskilled, complete nincompoop. It's really a war of attrition - at some point, one has to throw them a bone to leave.

The IRS auditors are even worse.

In TurboTax, one is prompted for "Use Tax" on goods purchased from out of state. Mr. Boe and I had a debate about this recently (oddly, he won). He claimed that even without an internet sales tax law, that legally, we all owe "use tax" to the State on items purchased from internet retailers such as Amazon.

I conceded defeat until I can do more research - but knowing the government, I suspect he is correct. I hate it when that happens. ;)

With as much gripping about the State deficit, I'm not so sure they do get theirs.

Sales Tax and property taxes is where most of it comes from, I believe.

I truly despise Socialists/Progressives. Those A*sholes have been trying to take over the Internet by way of taxation for many years. I just don't understand why so many people continue to vote for the Democrats. So many are just giving their Freedom & Liberty away. That's the saddest part of this Socialist/Progressive takeover. Not enough people are standing up and fighting them. They'll ruin the Internet just like they ruin everything else they touch.

you do realize that you are suppose to legally pay your state the sales taxes you owe for your out of state purchases?

I don't know if the federal gvt has the power to force citizen's to pay those State sales taxes or not...? this is really the question that matters.

the more money the States collect in sales taxes the less money the fed gvt has to give them in bailouts....this could be a good thing?

The more money the States collect in taxes means the more money the States get to spend.
And when they spend all the money they get from this then they will go to the Federal Government crying for more...The Federal government will give the States the money they ask for and will raise our taxes anyway.

Don't you people get it yet,we are being taxed out of existence. The local and Federal Governments only care about getting their hands on as much money as possible so they can dole it out as they see fit and making the citizens dependent on them...you want stuff you have to keep voting them in.The Obama administration want to control the citizens as much as possible. :eusa_shhh:

Vote out all Socialist/Progressive Democrats. That's your only hope in preventing those creeps from destroying the Internet. Everything the Socialists/Progressives touch, immediately turns to chit. They've been trying to take over the Internet for years. Get out and vote. It's your only chance. Make 2010 count.
