The democrats really believe that same sex marriage is supported by a majority of Americans. They believe that just because it's been defeated by vote in every state that put it on the ballot, it still doesn't mean that Americans reject it. Times have changed and if it came up for a vote today, every state would have legalized same sex marriage.
In reality, this is a major loser for democrats. No one who was going to vote for Romney will switch to obama because the democrats now support same sex marriage. It might cost obama the black vote though. And it will simply galvanize donors to donate yet more to Romney. Gays were upset about Christian money supporting Prop 8???? Well, they ain't seen nuthin yet.

It's not going to change the minds of the smart people out there that really look into all the issues, and they know what Obama has done to us. Just because he's pro-gay marriage does not mean he's going to do a better job the next 4 years than he's done already. Most people are smarter than that....
He's going to have do something REALLY big that will help fix the economy and help bring more good paying jobs here. That is what people want.....and that is what people know he's a failure at.

Democrats already had the youth and liberal vote. They had the black vote too, but now that's in the balance. What the democrats might do is take the whole issue of Romney being a Mormon off the table as a point of contention.

Not really. The GOP has taken a hard right, woman hating, gay hating, bigoted/jesus stance on the issue to rally the extremist right loons. Those on the left would no way in hell support the GOP in a million years, that's why they are going for it.
Gay marriage is becoming more and more accepted by the day, and is extremely important to two key demographics that are the most upset at Obama, the youth vote and the liberals. Running on a pro-gay marriage position would rally those voters significantly.
