Senate rejects Iraq pullout

The Democrat-led Senate yesterday failed to set a spring deadline for withdrawing most U.S. troops from Iraq after a rare all-night debate did not sway Republicans united behind giving President Bush's war strategy through September to show progress.

The amendment died 52-47 — falling shy of the 60 needed to advance it to a simple-majority vote. Democrats' months-long push to attract support to end the war garnered one new Republican, Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, who co-sponsored the bill last week.

"Last night's theatrics accomplished nothing," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "We could have had the vote on the [amendment] without any of this fanfare. And that's really all it amounted to: sound and fury."

The Senate action took place as a Zogby poll released yesterday showed that 14 percent of likely voters rated Congress' performance as excellent or good — 20 points below Mr. Bush's 34 percent and the lowest ever recorded by the pollster.

Senate Democratic leaders criticized Republicans for filibustering and immediately pulled from consideration the underlying bill that calls for increasing both the pay for troops and the size of the Army and Marines.

"At the end of this debate, we're all a little bit weary, but we're one vote closer to ending this war," said Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, Illinois Democrat. "Many senators who've gone home and said they're opposed to the war voted to continue the war today. They'll have to answer to the voters."

Dems did accomplish one thing. They proved why they are tanking in the polls

'Slumber party' draws yawns

The tidy cots, the earnest speeches, the candlelight vigil. After staging a 21-hour debate over the war in Iraq on Tuesday night, Sen. Harry Reid pined for drama, publicity and pundit chatter. Did the Nevada Democrat's dream of buzz and popular appeal come true?

Well, not exactly.

"It was a smoke screen. Senators talk all night of ending the war and bringing our troops home, and they still give Bush billions," peace activist Cindy Sheehan said yesterday.

"This was a buzzless venture if I ever saw one," writer Lucianne Goldberg said. "I think Reid just made people mad."

Her well-traveled blog (www.lucianne.com) featured a photo of the bespectacled lawmaker in full filibuster mode, sporting the caption: "Harry Reid gets word his nurse will not let him stay up all night."

Meanwhile, Mrs. Goldberg had her eye on public approval numbers.

"There's a new Reuters/Zogby poll out showing President Bush up to 34 percent and Congress at 14 percent," she said. "Maybe it's beginning to turn around. The race is to the tortoise."

Indeed, the national survey of 1,012 likely voters, taken last Thursday through Saturday, revealed that Mr. Bush's approval rating was up four points since March, while the Democrat-controlled Congress garnered its worst ratings in Zogby's history.

Republicans in the Senate had an opportunity to back their words with action, today, and support the Reed-Levin amendment. They let that opportunity slip away. Instead, they continued to shield President Bush and allow his failed policies regarding Iraq go unchallenged.

In the meantime, our soldiers and marines continue to be killed, wounded and maimed. Do they understand that the life of one of those soldiers or marines is worth more than the combined and cumulative careers of ever member of Congress? Do they realize that your first loyalty...their first duty...lies not with party or president but with the Constitution? The document, which is the cornerstone of the Republic...that their oath of office requires them to uphold it against all enemies, both foreign and domestic?...That they swear true faith and allegiance to?

When are they going to do your duty and hold this President AND his administration accountable for their actions? If they are unwilling, or incapable, of doing so perhaps they should pack their bags and come home. Let someone who understands that their oath of office was not to their party or to the president take up the duty that Senate Republicans are either unwilling or incapable of doing.

You are as pathetic as they are. You are an apologist for the continued killing, wounding and maiming of our troops as a salve to the ego of the man we call "Mr. President".
