Demonizing the President

The press did a disservice to the president early on by seeming to abdicate their role of objective reporting and of speaking truth to power.

Chris Matthews became the symbol of this phenomenon when he said that it was his job as a journalist to help the Obama administration be a success.

When the traditional watchdogs seemed to say they wouldn't be doing their jobs, we became watchdogs.

In addition to the natural partisan resistance anyone in the Oval Office will face, a significant portion of the resistance to Obama has been reaction to the people who were building him up as something tantamount to a savior before he had ever done anything. How many days was he in office before he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize? Less than 12.

That was nauseating.

And then when we expressed any dissent - whether it was to items on Obama's agenda or whether it was an expression of disbelief as we looked out onto the sea of euphoric Obama supporters -- we were told our dissent arose from racism. And then we were angered.

Since that time we have been waiting for others to wake up, and finally they are. It's been very amusing (and frankly a relief) to watch more and more members of the mainstream media start to recant the hype they were responsible for spreading in 2008.

To disagreee with policy is one thing, but the out and out hate and disrespect shown any president is just wrong.

Either you agree with this, or you are a hypocrite.

That is an oversimplification of the matter.

Part of the problem with how this president is viewed around America is the range of reaction which was branded as hate and disrespect.

By using that description too much, it added tension unnecessarily. It caused anger, and that brought about more negative responses for Obama's supporters and people in the media to label as hatred. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Obama had enough natural obstacles in Washington and in the headwinds of the economy without people who were supposedly looking out for him throwing gasoline on a pile of wood, then tossing in a match, and saying, "see we told you ... the fires of hatred burn".

President Obama Maintains His Dignity When Faced With Racist and Bigoted Attacks

One of the more difficult exercises for human beings is respecting another person regardless of their race, religion, or world view. For the past three years, since the rise of conservative extremism, the lack of respect among a large segment of the population for other Americans has revealed a level of contempt and hatred that is normally reserved for a hated enemy, and it informs the inherent inhumanity that is eating away at society. However, conservatives are following the lead of the political heroes who have shown nothing but contempt for the American people and especially the first African American President.

On Friday a reporter interrupted President Obama’s speech announcing that children of undocumented immigrants would not be deported, and it is a stark reminder that the opposition to the President is not his political ideology, but his race. One might even excuse the reporter’s disrespectful interruption as an isolated incident, but throughout this President’s tenure, everyone from low-class teabaggers to bigoted religious sycophants to sitting legislators have treated him like a third class citizen instead of the President of the United States.

The disrespect began in earnest when Republicans acted as if they won the 2008 general election and it continues unabated because the white racist element cannot fathom, or accept, that the American people elected an African American man to lead the country. President Obama ran, and has governed, as a Centrist who has been friendly to business, Wall Street, and especially Republicans as he has attempted bipartisanship on every one of his legislative agendas. Indeed, many of the President’s policies were once held by Republicans, and yet to show their opposition they obstructed, voted against, and used fallacious propaganda to convince the American people that the President is an interloper who illegally inhabits the position they think is reserved for a white Christian male.

What is incredible, no, phenomenal, is that President Obama has maintained dignity in the face of racist and bigoted attacks on his character and Republican assaults on his administration as a Socialist takeover when a normal man would lash out with vindictive retribution. Despite the obstruction to every single one of his policies to get the economy up and running and Americans working again, President Obama has taken the high road and attempted to work with Republicans to help all Americans and it is testament to his character and devotion to fulfilling his oath of office.

President Obama Maintains His Dignity When Faced With Racist and Bigoted Attacks

I really wish I could post the entire article. I hope a lot of you will read it. I think it is one of the best articles I've read on the disrespect shown President Obama. And anybody that recognizes themselves in the article should be really ashamed.

Why would I read the whole article when the part you posted contains a lie?

It's not a lie and you know it. Based on what would you even make such a comment???

Based on the fact that interrupting presidents is a time honored tradition. This particular incident made the news because Obama actually lost his cool in public, something that has been rumored to happen in private a lot.

You said it better than I ever could. Thanks, mister.

Drunks farting in an insane asylum "say it" beter than you ever could.

But Peach is wrong. So your accolades are just praising her with faint damn.

It really is the truth, L. You are one of the few half way reasonable conservatives on this site. To disagreee with policy is one thing, but the out and out hate and disrespect shown this president is just wrong.

What say you, Rinata?

So since Bill said it I am supposed to agree ?

I can say whatever I want to about Obama.... and YES, I said plenty about Bush as well. They both SUCK!!!

We have not had a real man in The Oval Office since Ronald Wilson Reagan.

And if my memory serves me.... I think the left had a hayday with him as well.

Remember that BD..???? Well I do....

Im sorry my friend, but this touches a nerve with me. Obama is nothing special... this has gone on with every POTUS. Not just Boy Wonder....
This kind of speech (ugly) is what the 1st Amendment was written for...it certainly wasn't for pleasant speech.

Reagan was not a 'man' in my eyes; more like child tied to the designer clothes of "Mommy". The last "real man", if such qualification existed would be Clinton, and he is irritatingly MALE. Bush II made Reagan look passable, which is tough.

Really? You're clueless, and not very bright

Why does it make me a hypocrite? I think every president needs to be reminded that there are people out there that hate him and will disrespect him just because they disagree with his policies.

Please, obama has had nothing compared to Bush and his administration
So vicious lies about Bush justify the same against Obama? One of the biggest problems with politics is payback.

Vicious lies are never justified, which is why Obama needs to be reminded that everyone who disagrees with him is not a racist. The man is a narcissist, and needs to be reminded that he is not a fracking god.

I do agree with this and posted about just that twice in the last week. Of course those posts were ignored.

Okay, one last time. It is not acceptable to treat any president with disrespect. I did not wish GWB anything but success as our president. I never, ever wished him to fail, get hurt, or die. I did not approve of unkind stories about his wife and daughters. Laura Bush is a lovely woman and I really like her. The girls are very sweet, intelligent, and pretty. The policies adhered to by GWB in the WH had absolutely nothing to do with them.

I don't think GWB was a good president. But I still rooted for him and liked him at times. Like when he stood on the fire truck after 9/11 and when he dodged those shoes thrown at him. That was great!!! The thrower wasn't even close!!! I was surprised Bush could move that fast!!! And he was very cool about it. One of my favorite Bush moments.

President Obama deserves a lot better than he has been getting.

I'm having trouble with the bias of the article.

There's increasingly widespread agreement that Obama is a whiner who throws around blame to explain away his failures but it's wrong to use commonly understood vernacular to describe what he is doing?

If "crybaby" is the wrong word to describe Obama, what is a good word befitting the office of the presidency but which adequately conveys the observation of Obama's buck-passing way of dealing out blame?

Widespread agreement among right wingnuts..
