Democrats scramble on health care after GOP win

Like I said a couple days ago, Brown winning will make this bill happen way way faster than I thought. Go Brown...oh and boo bye Liebermann...who needs you now?

So what did National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn take from Scott Brown's (R) win last night?

In an interview on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports," Cornyn told Mitchell that when it comes to health care, the message voters were sending was, "Slow down and work together, and listen to us and our concerns. Don't just try to pass something and ignore our disapproval of what you are trying to do."

I hope he is kidding. I have never seen a party bend over backwards like the Democrats have over this health care plan to try and please those old fart Republicans. Especially the prez. It makes me angry at him. He needs to get it through his head that Republicans will never, ever work with him or even try to appear to be reasonable. They are just dead weight.

And Mr. Cornyn is a lying sack of you know what.

I've sent several emails to the prez and I told him he is being way to accommodating and that he needs to ignore them.

Would you please give examples of the 'party' trying to please the republicans? Could you give and example of the 'prez' doing anything to 'please' republicans (especially after jetting all over the world apologizing for this country's existence).

We the thinking people understand that the Democrats bent over backwards to get the votes they needed from their own party and the Republicans could do absolutely nothing to stop them. they held their own bill up because they couldn't pass it with a super majority. And then the change in Massachusetts state law they made to protect themselves from Governor Romney came back to bite them on the ass, and give us Senator Brown. They have nothing. And they have proven it to the American people.

Don't you read or watch the news??? He is being criticized constantly for catering to the miserable Republican party. Obama did make "centrist compromises," and liberals in the Democratic Party didn't like it. Obama did the opposite of Bush's style of governing -- he engaged the congressional minority, listened to their ideas, and weakened his own bill to garner a larger majority. House Republicans insisted on a worse bill, Democrats wouldn't give them one, so the GOP voted against it.

I don't know why I am even responding to you. Asking for examples of the prez "doing anything to please Republicans". That's all he's done!!! And I don't believe that you don't know that.

God the Democrats are pussies, huh? But they are still the lesser of the two evils.

But god Nancy and Harry and Obama are either stupid or spineless. They need to realize the GOP are not willing to work with them. The GOP only want to ruin them.

What amazes me more is how dumb voters are. I can't believe they gave the GOP Kennedy's seat. Do you see how fast voters forget? Have we already forgiven the GOP for the last 8 years? Amazing.

And why does Obama have a bunch of centrists/clintonites working for him? They sold the middle class down the river along with the GOP. NAFTA. Free trade.

These Democrats are traitors. We elected them to take back the country for the middle class and so far they are unable and/or unwilling to get anything done.

And they have better numbers than Bush did. Bush and the GOP knew how to pay off Democrats to get their votes. How come the Dems don't get it?

I have held my tongue and thought Obama knew what he was doing. But so far he's looking like he doesn't have a clue. Maybe he's happy just to be president. Maybe he realizes he can't fix what is wrong because the corporations own this country. He won't say it, but his actions suggest he can't and/or won't.

And did Harry Reed say they won't pass healthcare with 51 votes? They can if they want to. I heard today Harry said that they are going to wait for that Massachussets guy to get to washington before they try to finalize the healthcare bill? Does he think it will be possible when that guy arrives? That guy will only be another NO.

I am just waiting and hoping the Dems know what they are doing. So far, doesn't look like they do.

They don't have to worry about my vote. But it sure does look like they are going to lose seats this year. And it also looks like they will get NOTHING done between now and then.

Are they really this incompetent?

They blew it!!! That's because guys like Lieberman aren't really Democrats.

So why does Obama keep inviting him to the white house?

Actually, it's elitist to think people were dumb to elect Scott Brown. And even you would say NO to this corrupt health care legislation. Scott Brown is coming to Washington in the hopes that health care REFORM are brought back to square one, and real REFORM occurs. If you think this guy caters to corporate interests or lobbyists, his track record proves otherwise. He has already recognized that there are good parts to this bill.

No one wants government run health care.
Medicare costs need to be reviewed compared to private costs.
Tort reform is necessary.
Everyone should have healthcare (We had to wait until 2010 for this???)
Pre-existing conditions should not be denied insurance. (we had to wait until 2010 for this???)

The point is that after supposedly a decade of Democratic planning the health care overhaul, it's quite obvious the planners were smoking crack paid for by the drug and insurance company lobbyists. Every time I listen to the proponents I hear baby talk. Adding 30 million healthy kids to insurance coffers is no win for me. The costs were ridiculous, no one in his right mind would ever expect any Congress to cut Medicare to pay for it, nothing to restrict the costs of care, and there was no reform. Instead of catering to corporate interests and absolutely selling us out, what about reform for the American people? I'm telling ya, if someone doesn't stop them, the cost of health care going to get shifted from the rich guys right to Mom and Dad. Someone has to show some balls and look at mandates on pricing and cost controls. The folks who argue the loudest against that are the guys making all the money off of us.

Yes, the entire discussion needs to go back to square one, and the people's points need to be taken into account on any new debate on health care REFORM. Enough of the back room deals and lobbyist cash.

I have thought from the beginning that Obama was a really good guy and I sincerely believe his intentions were good when he reached out to the GOP. But I really don't believe he knew how evil they really are.

Now he needs to ignore their sorry asses and not worry about what they want or don't want. It's perfectly clear that they care more about ruining him than they care about what's good for the country. He needs to forget trying to work with the GOP.

Oh God Rinata, grow up. Geezus.

Obama ignored you and every other American except the rich and people who work in government. Hence, Scott Brown.

And here is the argument, from the same single viewpoint that it always is.

Apparently Teabagger-Types firmly believe that Madison was the only founding father, and that he was the final word on the Constitution.

Various social programs throughout the last century have relied on the "Provide for the General Welfare" clause, and have NEVER been struck down by the Supreme Court on the basis of being unconstitutional in this manner.

But hey, I guess all those congresses that made the programs and all the supreme court justices that didn't overturn the laws were all just a bunch of "loonie-goonies" (whatever the hell that means).

And I guess the only people that know how to correctly interpret the constitution are a bunch of radical right-wingers 230 years after the fact.

LOL.

By your math... the Congress can do anything it wants. There are no restraints. The sky's the limit.

That kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a constitution at all, doesn't it? And even though you like the constitutional depredations Pelosi and Reid are proposing right now... will you still like the notion of an "unlimited" Congress when the shoe is on the other foot, when Republicans are in control?

See. That's the problem with you socialists. You view the U.S. Constitution as some kind of tool you can use to shield you, protect YOUR civil liberties... all the while you're shitting on everyone else's and using our contract with government to wipe your slimy asses with.

You want to cite Article I, Section 1, Clause 1??? ...Then cite the whole thing:

“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States”

This clause is CLEARLY directing Congress on how to collect and spend tax monies. And THAT is how this clause has been interpreted traditionally.

When it comes to the "individual mandate" in this healthcare fiasco... there's no spending or tax collection involved in that particular edict to citizens. It directs individuals to buy an insurance product, to spend their own money on it.

Further, this bill does NOT tax "uniformly throughout the United States" due to the special back room deals that Democrats have made to buy votes. And... it ORDERS the States to create "exchanges" or have it done for them. The federal government cannot commandeer any branches of state government.
Hatch, Blackwell and Klukowski: Why the Health-Care Bills Are Unconstitutional - WSJ.com

That's just a few of the problems with the proposed legislation. Now, let's look at what they've already passed in the Porkulus bill. Today, if Uncle Barry wants a peek at your medical record, he's got to get a subpoena to do it. But by 2014 all of our private information is ordered to be databased for "Comparative Effectiveness Research".
This, of course, is nothing but a thin veneer to establish a rationing board and "control" costs similar to Britain's HOPE board.

"Subpoena? We don't need no stinkin' subpoena!". Any bureaucrat that the federal government decides to authorize will have access to the most intimate details of your very body.

Now, how does that get past the 4th?
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Whether one argues that a private medical record is the property of the patient or of the doctor, one thing it sure as hell is NOT... is the property of the U.S. government.

Bottom line. You people don't have a constitutional leg to stand on with this pile of crap, and you know it. You want to put this ancient contract with government asunder? Then you should be prepared for the results. Without it, you have nothing but "right of might" to compel us. Government at the point of a gun.

The tyrant holds the people in a slippery grip indeed. Without the the calming influence of law, the arbiter of conflict resolution... you're holding a REALLY ANGRY tiger by its tail. Without the U.S. Constitution, there's nothing stopping us from loading every hard-nosed socialist onto a boat, withdrawing citizenship, and dropping your asses off in international waters. It's only the LAW which keeps us from doing it. Believe me when I say, it's not 'cause we like you.

p.s. Let's not forget that FDR threatened to "pack the court" to get those social programs you mentioned above.

I have to wonder how they'd fare today, in the age of instant news, should they once more find themselves before the Supreme Court. It's possible that you guys could fuck around and get Social Security/Medicare overturned on a constitutional challenge to Obamacare. Wouldn't THAT make you popular with the older crowd?

That's your opinion, which I don't share. Why are you changing the subject?? Can't you address what I said in my post?? Or are you trying to say that Republicans gave it their all and really tried to work with the new administration??? That they haven't shown over and over that they had nothing but contempt for Obama??

Republicans were invited to participate at one point. Then they started to find themselves locked out of meetings. Mr "I won" made it clear what "he" wanted and expected. Republicans had no power to stop his agenda, So who stopped him? No one except your fellow leftists. I guess they just couldn't get their bribes fast enough. And now because they changed the law in Massachusetts to protect Kerrys position they lost what used to be the Kennedy seat. Just gotta love it.

Republicans of any tact were not allowed to participate, it was made clear and will be remembered, not just by those in the 'party.' Truth is the independents were totally turned off by the lack of any attempts at bi-partisanship. A lesson, obviously lost on the left.

Naw, I'm quite sure the Democrats got quite a bit less from the lobbies on the other side of the health care issue, after all when it comes to corruption Republicans have always been better at negotiating bribes for private money, However not to sell those Democrats short, they really shine on the bribes using tax payer funds.

At least the cons can now hitch their wagon to someone a tad smarter than Sarah Palin. But I do wonder what they really know about the guy. He's far more moderate than your basic "conservative" tea partier, for example. He's okay with gay marriage and isn't pro-life. Brown is also one of those evil...gasp...LAWYERS.

According to a HELP [Health, Education, Labor and Pensions] Committee document about bipartisan aspects of the health reform bill the committee passed July 15, the final bill included "161 Republican amendments," including "several amendments from Senators [Mike] Enzi [R-WY], [Tom] Coburn [R-OK], [Pat] Roberts [R-KS] and others [that] make certain that nothing in the legislation will allow for rationing of care," and reflected the efforts of "six bipartisan working groups" that "met a combined 72 times" in 2009 as well as "30 bipartisan hearings on health care reform" since 2007, half of which were held in 2009. [HELP Committee document, 7/09] And according to the Senate Finance Committee's document detailing the amendments to the Chairman's Mark considered, at least 13 amendments sponsored by one or more Republican senators were included in the bill.
