The transformation started with Roosevelt in the 1930s pushing Social Security and other poor and middle class initiatives and ended with Johnson in the 1960s pushing for the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The racist Southern Dixiecrats from the 1960s joined the Repug Party which is a major reason why the Repug Party is so fucking worthless today.
