Abraham Lincoln, one of the founder of the Republican Party and ranked as one of our best presidents, would probably have a very difficult time in the party today. His lack of support for states rights, sympathies for labor, and his lack of membership in any Christian church or for that matter any church would certainly make him an undesirable candidate and he would certainly be proclaim a liberal.
Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican ranked by most polls as one of our top 5 presidents would have an even harder time than Lincoln being accepted by the party today. Roosevelt openly worked to move the party in a progressive direction. His work busting the trusts, regulation on food, drugs, and banking, and taking away hundreds of thousands of acres from developers for park and monuments would no doubt brand him a socialist today.
Considering the record of Ronald Reagan rather than his rhetoric, he certainly would have a pretty tough time today in the Republican Party. Contrary to his image of a champion of small government, during his 8 years in the Whitehouse he racked up the largest deficits since WWII. Federal civilian employment reached over 3 million during his term in office, something we havent seen in 20 years. Couple this with an amnesty for 2.5 million illegal aliens .
