Sofia. “Compulsory voting is anti-constitutional,” said Yanko Yankov, MP with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) party, speaking for Radio FOCUS.
According to him, the Constitutional Court is objective and it will definitely return the text for revision as it is anti-constitutional.
“By turning a fundamental right into an obligation we are violating the major law,” the politician remarked.
Mr Yankov added that the public practice in Bulgaria showed that rendering something obligatory had never had a positive effect.
“Bulgarians’ mentality and psychology react negatively to everything that is made compulsory. The compulsory voting is a product of the impotence of the political powers to motivate the citizens to cast their vote for concrete and clear political projects, to feel the benefits of the choice they have made,” the politician commented further.
