Probe may force DeLay to step down

WASHINGTON, March 25 (UPI) -- House Republican leader Tom DeLay of Texas is reportedly discussing temporarily stepping down from his post if he is indicted.

A Texas grand jury is investigating him for alleged campaign finance abuses.

Roll Call reported Thursday the conservative majority leader has begun quiet discussions with a handful of colleagues about the possibility, which would be required under Republican conference rules.

Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, a Democrat, has been conducting an investigation into whether Texans for a Republican Majority, a non-profit group and related political action committee with ties to DeLay, broke Texas law during the 2002 state legislative elections by using corporate donations.

If indicted, DeLay would be allowed to return to his leadership post if cleared of the charges, reduced to a non-felony, or if they were dismissed by the court.

DeLay has denied any wrongdoing, decrying the inquiry as a politically motivated witch hunt.

House Republicans argue that the move is an act of vengeance following the successful GOP redistricting effort in the state, which was lead by DeLay.

I saw something MSNBC about this. This kind of shit makes my point about campaign finance reform. By the way, where can I get the rest of the skinny on it? I wonder whether he's really guilty or if it is just a witch hunt? Anyone have any idea?

There is only one kind of campaign finance reform we need. Let every citizen or american organization donate as much money as they would like, just make it full disclosure. No Anonymous donations. Then if any group gets favors from a certain politician the public can know and vote any incorrupt figure out of office.

Limiting what people can say about politicians and how much they can donate, does not stop corrupt politicians. exposing corrupt politicians and voting them out does.

Yes i know...Just look as Senator McCain and his Incumbent protection act, AKA "Campaign Finance Reform" Bill. Im sorry but anyone who says they cant help but be corrupted, doesnt deserve to be there, regardless of how they served in Vietnam. I think the same about Senator Daschle who for some reason doesnt have any idea where all the money in the budget Congress passes every year goes. Its there job to be honest, Do whats best for the country, and know whats going on with the tax payer money. If they are too corrupt and dont care what happens with the money, they just step down or atleast stop complaining when there are problems they didnt take care of.

What you said is a good step in the right direction. Corrupt politicians unfortunately can do a lot of damage before they are voted out of office though.
....But, it looks like Texas has recovered, from "Bugs" DeLay.....

....ANYHOW!!!!

"The Supreme Court Friday night blocked a redistricting plan for Texas drawn by a panel of federal judges, putting the justices in the middle of a partisan battle over how the state’s electoral maps should change to recognize the state’s burgeoning minority population."

Conviction of ex-US House leader DeLay's tossed
Sep. 19 11:05 AM EDT — A Texas appeals court has overturned the money laundering conviction of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.
The Texas 3rd Court of Appeals said in a 2-1 ruling on Thursday that DeLay had been acquitted. DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison, but his sentence was on hold while his case made its way through the appellate process.

DeLay's attorney, Brian Wice, told The Associated Press that the Republican was "ecstatic" and gratified by the ruling.

DeLay was found guilty in November 2010 of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering for helping illegally funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.

In Thursday's ruling, the judges wrote "we reverse the judgments of the trial court and render judgments of acquittal."

Democrats phonied up a case. They failed. They fabricated evidence and even the fabrications were wrong.

Won't matter. Didn't matter then. The left didn't care if they managed a conviction or not. The purpose of the entire law suit was to get DeLay out of politics.

He was far to effective for their liking.

Now he can get back in and if any democrat says anything he can say they are lying just like last time.

In fact, republicans can generally use this. The democrats are lying, just like they lied about Tom Delay.

I know Tom DeLay, the man who impregnated his girl friend and encouraged her to abort and then he went on to a long and inglorious political career.
