Its like that I lived in the Us for 4+ years now I lived 30 years in Germany.
I am by passport a German and US permanent resident.

After 5 years I could become a US citizen and retain my
German citizenship ( universal healthcare and national pride )

I will probably go for the PHD in Washington DC at a private university in International relations.

Now my moral problem. I feel I am 70% German 30% American.

I am ideologically a supporter of the trans atlantic-alliance.

I believe in a culture war between the west (NAto) and the muslims.

Becoming a US citizen has some legal advantages and as a guest
and believing in the concept of honoring your host I am pro american.
I have had few instances of discrimination where people equate me
to Nazis but in general I am very welcomed here. Thanks for that.

When I would become a Us citizen I would have to swear my alligiance
to the US. While that in general is not the problem, it also would
theoretically say I only support the US.

This would not be 100% honest. I am a German still in my heart.
I would not work against the Us or Germany. My interest are good
relationships between the countries.

As you might have noticed from my posts I am a centrist that
like to call it as I see it.

I wonder if I should go for the step and become a US citizen.

Is it morally right ? Because I cant be a 100% American.
Still I am interested in what is good for the US and Germany.

Sure I could just go for it, and do it , but it is more a moral
question.

Is it right to pledge allegiance to the Us when in my heart
I could never deny my allegiance to Germany.

Give me some input it would be greatly appreciated.

Correct me if im wrong but dont they offer dual citizenship status? This declares that you are a citizen of your native born country and of the US. I believe more in the idea. If you respect the US and its laws then you are a citizen in my book. Hell most of our natural born citizens can't even do that much.

yes they do, but I wonder if this is the right way to go.

You have to respect yourself in order to make judgements.

As I see it you need to have alligiance to the country
that offers you citizenship.

Fake assholes like the muslims in the Uk that bombed
London are out there.

What do you expect as a Us patriot from the "new citizen"

Is it ok or understandable for you that I still have allegiance to
Germany while being a Us citizen ?

If your asking if you had to choose in a war between US and Germany again then that is difficult. In sports i usually say that you root for where you are born. This is quite different though. I believe that in the current landscape being a duel citizen would be ok because you could offer your allegiance to both countries without conflicts. If something arose later on, i guess you'd have to evaluate what kind of conflict would arise.

What troubles me, I know other immigrants that denigrate
the US by trashtalking it but plan on becoming citizens

I dont want to be a hypocrite, becoming a citizen means
responsibility to me.

What does it take to be considered a German in my view.

1) blood your grandparents or parents are German you are
"one of us " .

2) you live in Germany speak German and are willing to fight for
Germany over anything else.

My moral problem is that I could not fight against Germany without
feeling as a traitor. The exception would be a communist or fascist
dictatorial regime taking power in Germany.

As I said I "feel" 70% German 30% American.

I try to reflect if it is honorable to pledge alligiance when
there is the one exception.

Yes I would never work against the Us for Germany still
I am not sure it is right to try for citizenship when
you are not at least 50% American in your heart.

Its not about the official process. Its more about who I am
and what I stand for.

Hope that makes sense.

I see what your saying. I feel by your actions in responsibilty, you have already become an American citizen. The country needs people like you who show gratitude, loyalty, responsibility and courage. Courage is traveling to a strange new land with the intention of living there. I couldnt imagine traveling to any other country on this earth and intending to live there. MAinly because i dont know what to expect. Thats what all immigrants face and for it i believe they contain a great deal of courage.

You my friend typify an American. You show courage in the face of tough decisions and measure your options carefully. In my eyes you are a citizen.

this country was built on the backs of people like you.....and just like them.... you will make the correct decission and when faced with difficult choices you will do the right thing.

Thank you for you kind words.

You have to live in a foreign country to understand the problems
the "good" people have to pledge their allegiance. There are lot
of turks in Germany, the second Generation has the problem
that Turkey demands military service for them to keep
the Turkish passport. They speak German are more liberal
but still are Turkish to a degree. It took me to live here
to understand their problem. Before I always thought
you are either with us or against us, but it is more complicated.

I guess I am getting ready to officially join the Us.

Thanks for your response. I guess I will wait for another
couple of year and when my assumption is right and
I feel more as an American I ll do the final step.

In the end, where you live, where your friends live is
very important. I assume if my family would live
here it would be easier. With them being in Germany
it is my duty to fight for them too.

This board being more then average nationalistic (at least I assume)
it means alot to me.

It is a big difference in comparison to Germany. Germany is more hostile
to foreigners and immigrants and I assume it makes it
harder for me to take a more liberal view on immigration.

Nosarcasm, when faced with any serious decision, you must go with your gut. I am sure that deep down, your gut is telling you the answer.

FWIW, from what I have read in this thread, you would make a fine citizen.

every nation has it's group that is hostile to those that were not born there......come to california....nobody really gives a shit....btw....love germany.....nicest damn people....

I lived in California for a year.

But there I saw the problems of immigration as the official Us does it.

I was one of the few non spanish speaking immigrants at the IRS.

If you want to be a citizen you should be able to correspond in English.

Not that my grammar is great but people usually get what I try to
convey.

Those Mexicans that do not should not be Americans.
Yeah I am not one to vote on it , but still I insist on only
English as the sole language.

Which is funny. When Americans goto other countries, they all expect us to know and speak the language. Many Americans make at last a passing effort to speak the native tongue even for just a vacation. Yet when people come here, they keep their own language and expect everyone to adjust to them. I guess because so many liberal assholes do, they see it as ok.

in general with English you will do fine in Europe.

Its the language used mostly in business.

Except France.

Still we will both you with lorry instead of truck,

long live the limey empire.

Nosarcasm, I think you being a US citizen is a great thing. Can we trade you for for a couple of liberal movie stars? one Nosarcasm for Michael Moore and Jane Fonda would be an awesome deal!

This is ridiculous. The only group that's expecting (comprehensive) language accomodation are the Hispanics. Asian, European and Middle Eastern immigrants are doing just fine with English.

NoSarcasm,

The likelyhood of another war between Germany and the U.S. is very slim. In your lifetime you will probably not have to decide. Nevertheless go for dual citizenship and if the time comes search your heart and renounce one.

I am going for dual citizenship with another country, but I don't think I'll ever have any conflicts. You probably won't either.

Fortunately in this era democracies are not going to war with each other.

Yes and who bends over and says si? Freakin liberal a-holes who think things should be in multiple languages instead of English. Other than Canada, most other countries have 1 language that you have to know.

I'm a bit late. I think you would make an outstanding citizen for the US. Yes, I believe you can retain your German citizenship, which is good for you-though I'm not so sure US should allow the dual citizenship thing-but that is beside the point.

As you said earlier, your dilemna would come if US-Germany went to war-without either a communist or fascist in power in Germany. Well, doubt that would ever be something you would have to face. Our 'wars' are political/economic, barring some radical change in one of the countries make-up.

I think I mentioned before a German friend I have, that came to US at 17. She is now 29. She is still debating. When she considers US citizenship, she feels 'too German.' When she returns to Germany she feels unwanted and American. That has to be so rough.
