On December 6, 1889, Jefferson Davis died of acute bronchitis at the age of 81 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His body was temporarily interred at New Orleans’ Metairie Cemetery. It was later relocated in 1893 to a specially constructed memorial at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. His body lay in state at the New Orleans City Hall at Lafayette Square (now Gallier Hall), until December 11,1889.
