SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers solar flares auroras and near-Earth asteroids

"FILAMENT ERUPTION, EARTH-DIRECTED: On Sept. 2nd, an enormous filament of dark plasma, which had been snaking across the face of the sun for days, became unstable and erupted. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the event (movies: #1, #2). A CME emerging from the blast site appears to have an Earth-directed component"

2014 RC a 21 meter asteroid will be whizzing by on Sept 7th at just 0.1 ld (lunar distance, 1 LD = 384,000KM.)

Busy night as well for fireballs (asteroids skipping off the planet's atmosphere) with over 300 last night.

A very close call.

UPDATE: Possible fragment from 2014RC broke off an impacted in Nicaragua. Is a possible impact crater, but experts are skeptical it was a meteorite impact. One saying "It looks like a backhoe dug it up." Locals reported a loud bang though so something blew up or crashed there. Given the volatility though my thinking is some old land mine or something.

Life on this planet is pretty fragile. There are so many things that can end this fiasco called life on earth. Asteroids are real threat. Even earth has not settled down yet. Tectonic plates are still shifting which means a major catastrophe cannot be ruled out. If we survive all that, there is a good chance that Ukraine thing can develop into a full scale nuclear war, which means most of us will be gone.
