Denmark’s parliament on Tuesday gave the green light to an eight-month extension of the mandate of Danish troops in Iraq. The mandate would normally have run out Wednesday.

Most parties in the liberal-conservative government coalition and opposition voted for the extension until February 1 of the mandate for the 530 troops, which are mainly stationed at Basra in the south of the country under British command.

Only the former communists and the Socialist People’s Party voted against and called for an immediate withdrawal of the troops. During the vote, the five former communist deputies wore black T-shirts with the inscription "100.000 er doede" (100,000 have died) following the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Denmark’s mandate in Iraq normally runs for six months and is renewable. But the government decided to extend it by eight months so it will expire when Iraq holds general elections in December.
