OIL spikes upwards $25 dollars a barrel on news of the bailout!

the devaluation of the dollar, through all of our borrowing and printing money may hurt us everyday folk even more.....

The clear-eyed capitalists aren't blinded by ideology. They'll gladly accept the benefits of socialist policy if it puts money in their pockets. Meanwhile we have people trying to blame the other party for the mess and they're repeating the talking points distributed for their use. That's so sad that it's nigh on unbelievable.

the facts are obvious, and it is sad, really really sad. but then what have ya got? you got Pelosi, that' even sadder.

Just an overall bad situation at this point. Honestly, the only thing that is going to help is if we all work together to figure this things out. Partisan politics should go out the window at this point. Hopefully once congress comes back into session they will have a comprehensive plan to get this all worked out. The fact that all of this is going on during election time is not helping anything. Everyone is looking for a reason to make the other side look bad (including myself) in order to win, when I think we can all agree both sides got us into this.

well, it likely would have been better had the bailouts not happened
its a dumb thing to do, but both sides are at fault

Yep! both sides are at fault. What set me off was Pelosi saying "The Democrats bear no responsibility" As long as dimwits like she and Reid are in charge up there you can kiss bipartisanship goodbye.

I am yet to be convinced that bailouts are the way to go (if companies know they will always be bailed out by the government, why should they care if they partake in risky business practices), but at this point I do not see any other way around it. The financial institutions that are in risk of going under are vital elements of the economy and I fear what would happen if they went totally under. I guess we will have to just wait and see what happens a few years down the road. I would love to hear some other options, but sadly it seems like people are out of answers at the moment.

Your right, that was a stupid thing to say but she was just trying to make the point that there has been a serious mismanagement of the economy well before the Democrats took control of congress, so blaming it on them is unfair and completely untrue. To deny responsibility completely is just flat out wrong and stupid, but I think she got her point across.

Just because people you don't like are in control does not mean you should completely fail to compromise and be productive. Reid may not be the smartest man, but holding back our entire country from progress just to make that point is selfish and ignorant. Especially in the current situation that we are in now, both sides are gonna have to work together to come up with a solution, no matter who is in charge.

there was a bill in congress several years ago that was supposed to(not sure if it would have or not) fix this mess, and the dems blocked it from even coming to a vote

Well.......after the royal way that Idiot Bush and his merry band of morons has screwed up the economy (who ever thought you could cut taxes while spending billions on a war), as well as a lot of other things, I'm kind of the opinion that Bush is secretly working on making this a socialist place. All the big businesses are getting bought out by, as well as ran by, the government.

All you Republidiots, start dancing.

I did read something about that, but from what I have seen it, there is no guarantee that it would have helped. I believe that by 2005 Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had taken on too much bad debt and it was almost inevitable that they would collapse. If we are talking about the same thing, I believe the 2005 bill would have created an institution to oversee the two lenders, but by they point, they were already in the situation that we see today. Who knows, maybe they institution would have helped, but I feel it was already a lost cause at that point. I think even in 2003, when congress tried to do something the first time, it was too late. This has been a long time coming. We have just been trying to delay the inevitable for a long time now.

i kind of agree with that
fannie mae and freddie mac were a failed institution that were forced on the US by idiots on both sides of congress

I completely agree. As I said, I think we waited too long to make any real changes in the structure and running of the company that would have made any real difference. I will say, I do not really understand this Government Sponsored Enterprise however. The whole concept it kind of infuriating. Private investors get to make all the money when things are going well, and when they turn to shit (as they have recently), the tax payers are expected to foot the bill. Not a fan.

not a fan either missing! but it ain't just fannie mae, its my local bank where my money is and your banks and everybodies! up to 100k for each acct held... my, how wonderful! And this came about from the first scam pulled on us by the banks and wall street, the gvt bailed ''them'' out back then too, with legislation that continued to benefit the scammers....

what really is going on here? who REALLY runs our government?

it certainly doesn't appear to be, WE THE PEOPLE!

well, "WE THE PEOPLE" need to get off our asses and get some local election reforms started
when they changed the senate to direct election it took the line of responsibility out of the equation
and the people that were supposed to put the senate in place, control how the elections are done
we need to have a 50% +1 system set up where if someone doesnt get 50%+1 they have a run off election between the top two candidates
that would allow people to take a chance on some 3rd party candidates and not have to risk electing the worse of the two by default

also all states really need to enact the same system that Maine and Nebraska have for dividing the EC votes by congressional district
(also with the 50%+1 system in each district)
then you will see some change

You're correct. All the way back to when the Democrats used to control Congress. One and all are to blame. Pelosi has no point.
