Jimmy Carter to Chair Election Reform Commission

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Jimmy Carter will lead a bipartisan commission to examine problems with the U.S. election system, American University's Center for Democracy and Election Management said on Thursday.

Carter, a Democrat whose Carter Center has monitored more than 50 elections around the world, will co-chair the private commission with Republican James Baker, who served as Secretary of State under President George H. W. Bush.

Former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, a Democrat who lost his seat in the 2004 election, will also participate.

"I am concerned about the state of our electoral system and believe we need to improve it," Carter said in a statement. He said the group will assess "issues of inclusion" in federal voting and propose recommendations to improve the process.

"We will try to define an electoral system for the 21st century that will make Americans proud again," he said.

Though disputes over recounts and voter eligibility marred the 2000 U.S. presidential election, international monitors in place in November 2004 reported the polls were mostly fair.

Still, concerns emerged about exceedingly long lines that kept voters from the polls in several states including Ohio, whose 20 electoral college votes ultimately decided the election in President Bush (news - web sites)'s favor.

The Center for Democracy and Election Management, which will organize the work of Carter's commission, said the group would hold two public hearings -- the first on April 18 at American University in Washington and the second at Houston's Rice University in June.

The Commission on Federal Election Reform aims to produce a report to Congress on its findings by September.

Somehow having the most thorougly discredited president in recent history in tandem with an ultra lib ex-senator who was kicked to the curb by the voters does nothing to instill any confidence in me.

Jimmy Carter was a spineless, limp-wristed, weak-kneed, watery-eyed coward while he was president. The only thing that has changed is that in addition to the previously mentioned traits, the bastard is now senile to boot.

Yeah, we need him sticking his stupid nose into our affairs. You betcha.

Why is it that even after we throw these damn bums out of office, they just keep turning up to screw us over again and again?

Carter got elected in the first place.. Sure Gerry Ford wasn't the sharpest tack in the saddle but hey he was no peanut farmer either.. Must blame it on others as I couldn't vote in that election...But voted in the next one to oust his sorry, weak-kneed, do nothing to defend the country, ass!! Jimmy is the clown prince of liberal politicians.. Hooked up with tommy boy daschle, it's a hate America, neo-communist love fest.. What a fun bunch to be around...

Carter was elected because of Watergate. Period. The American people were upset with the GOP, so they thought they would give ole Jimmy a try. Also, since he was a Southerner, that ran as a "Christian" man (we all know now that it was a bunch of bullSHIT) he was able to secure the southern vote which is what won him the White House.
