Cue universal basic income debate: Brazil has distributed so much cash directly to its citizens in response to corona that poverty is at historic lows

No one here has yet to read the link.

I did. It and the OP are trying to make an argument for UBI/socialism by making it seem like some lasting changes have been made by a couple months of some governments handouts in Brazil. The economic damage from Covid is not even fully realized in Brazil yet. Poverty is going to go up and the government handouts are not sustainable at all. It's a terrible article and a terrible thread. Nothing that has happened in Brazil in response to Covid proves that socialism works.
The government hasn’t published its own figures yet but data from the Getulio Vargas Foundation, one of Brazil’s top universities, show that those living on less than $1.9 a day fell to 3.3% in June from 8% last year, and those below the poverty line were at 21.7% compared with 25.6%. Both represent 16-year lows.

Are you studying economics?

Show us some proof of you being in Brazil, or are you merely on the right wing.

Sure.

I attached an image of where they stamped my passport when I landed. Also I attached a picture of me overlooking some cool scenery. View attachment 385719View attachment 385720
Dated 02/11/19? Are you still there?

That was a different trip. I come here often. I have been here since March. I'm surprised you didn't notice that stamp first.

Brazil is not in a good position right now economically. The premise of your thread is asinine.

Because no months start with 00.

It is not my premise or my thread.

And, anecdotal evidence could be special pleading.

socialism works, my friends!

In the short term, socialism always works great. The problem comes when you run out of other people's cash.

Venezuela is a perfect example. When they first introduced land reforms, everyone was happy. When they had subsidized food, everyone was happy. When they introduced all their policies, they started off really great.

The problem is, eventually you run out of other people's money.

For example, they confiscated all the profits from the oil company, and then without profits, the production declined, and development of new oil supplies stopped.

In the end, they killed the source of wealth, and then .... had no wealth.

Then you have empty shelves, and people starving, and cooking up their pet dog to survive, and scratching through garbage cans.

The start of socialism can sometimes be good. But the end, is always, universally, bad.

US sanctions have nothing to do with free market Capitalism.
For more than a decade, the United States has imposed sanctions in response to activities of the Venezuelan government and Venezuelan individuals. In response to the authoritarian leadership of Nicolás Maduro, the Trump Administration has significantly expanded sanctions.--https://fas.org/sgp/crs/row/IF10715.pdf
Right wingers are either clueless and Causeless like usual or just plain ignorant.

And, socialism has helped those economies continue functioning. Cuba is another example of socialism still working even with sanctions. For comparison and contrast, the more capitalistic economy of South Africa fell after only about three years of sanctions.
