Records: Driver in fatal Chandler crash had 2 prior DUIs

dec 1 2015 Investigators believe speed and alcohol were factors in a wreck that killed five people in Chandler on Sunday. One of the drivers involved had two prior DUI convictions.

A sedan with one occupant crashed head-on with another sedan carrying four people Sunday at Dobson Road and Hunt Highway, said Officer Chris Hegstrom, an MCSO spokesman.

Hegstrom said Monday that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash that killed Secundino Fabela, 32, of Phoenix; Frank Hooper, 86, of Sun Lakes; Ella Hooper, 85, of Sun Lakes; Janice Mertens, 56, of Albuquerque; and Steven Hooper, 54, of Circle, Mont.

Court documents show Fabela had a history of driving under the influence. In June 2011, he was stopped by Gilbert police after witnesses noticed him driving erratically and hitting curbs, according to court records. Police noted that Fabela showed signs of impairment, and he admitted to "drinking a six pack" before driving, records indicate.

Fabela pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI and driving with a suspended license, according to court documents, and he was sentenced to spend nearly two years in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Previously, in March 2008, he had pleaded guilty in Maricopa Municipal Court to aggravated DUI, records show.
