Intel Mates FPGA With Future Xeon Server Chip
Intel reveals its FrankenChip ARM killer: one FPGA and one Xeon IN ONE SOCKET ? The Register
This has the potential, I believe, to revolutionize how computing - and in particular, high performance computing - is done. It will essentially allow programmers to design and implement new chip hardware in the CPU itself - on the fly. Improvement in execution time could be modest or it could be orders of magnitude, depending on the problem being solved.
I had also heard from a friend in the EE industry the chip will be able to take loops executing on the CPU and automatically program them onto the FPGA, without the user having to do anything. I'm having trouble finding a reference to this particular feature online. That would be pretty cool.
