I have a colleague who retired and moved to Costa Rica maybe 15 years ago. The cost of living is dirt cheap and you can build yourself a very nice house for a fraction of the cost you would have in America. The only problem he had was that one of the two types of monkeys there was destructive and would mess with his house (pull out electrical cables, pull of siding on the house, etc...). Otherwise, he just walked around barefoot on the beach with his lovely wife and went fishing every day. I have not heard from him in a while. But if the cartels and swarthy migrants are being driven through there, then the quality of life is sure to plunge.

There are two angles here. One sees migration as the fuel of industry; to a certain extent this is true and can have a positive impact on the entire economy. The other angle sees already established patrons being forced to share a diluted standard of living. This is also true to a certain extent. I guess the real, ugly Truth is that we are all transients with respect to our time on this floating lemonade stand and the guardians of commerce see a constant influx of ready hands as the only alternative to that particular attrition. It doesn't matter to them that a portion of those hands are under their owner's asses.
