Corporate welfare in action ....

The bulk of the subsidy is a planned $188.2 million property tax abatement of 71 percent over 20 years

Why does every other company in the area have to pay the full property tax, and Apple doesn't?

Who says every other company is?

Cities and states offer abatements to attract businesses. They create jobs and new taxation for the city and state.

They are allowing 71% reduction meaning that they are collecting 29% of taxes they would not otherwise collect if the land were to sit there. That's 2,000 acres that they will be paying that 29% on. That's a hell of a lot of money.

Oh, I see. So just the local mom and pops have to pay the full freight.

That sounds fair...

Twenty years.

Apple will leave way before then.

So how is the town going to recoup the government gifts?

50 workers.

Sorry, but life isn't fair and neither is taxation. If you want "fair" in your town, fine, but don't complain when nothing new moves there. Don't complain when there are no new jobs. Don't complain when they need to increase your taxes to make up for lost business they could have had by giving abatements. After all, taxes only go up when costs go up, they seldom come down.

It is government picking winners and losers, which is completely antithetical to conservatism and libertarianism.

Only a pseudocon would support this kind of government interference and behavioral control in the markets.

This is the same Apple whose CEO called Trump a racist. Our corporate overlords. Google is already deleting conservative accounts and manipulating web site.
Iowa isnt exactly Silly-conehead Calif.

that 200 million dollar investment will pay for itself in nothing flat and boost the local and state economy from now until the day Apple decides to go.

In that case it would have made a fine investment for private capital...right?

then private should have had the vision to offer it huh ?

In other words it was NOT an investment that "paid for itself in nothing flat". Otherwise greedy capitalists would have been all over it.

About ten years ago one of our customers started growing rapidly and needed a much larger space. They bought some land in one of our suburbs located on a street of old farm houses next to the highway. They got an abatement for the project.

It was miserable delivering there as the old road was in such bad shape it was like driving a truck on the moon. But the city tore out the two lane road in sections and began replacing it; some with four lanes. Before you knew it, other businesses started to build on that street and the side streets coming off of it. Several years later the state put up a new highway ramp for easier access to the new businesses. The Cleveland Clinic erected a new hospital with an ER and the street is still getting new businesses today.

The first business (our customer) built a brand new building with 25 docks. They expanded a few years later and today it's a 54 dock building providing hundreds of jobs.

Cities and states fight for such businesses with tax abatements because it's a huge investment for the city and state even with abatements. Without our customer deciding to relocate there, that street may very well be the same old farm house road it was ten years ago. It's called economic development.

Dont lie. Every liberal supports this as well and uses it to make sure welfare is never ever cut.

It is government making the playing field unlevel, keeping the little guys down while giving the big guys a boost.

It's fucking bullshit.

Yes, only a liberal could support such massive government interference in the markets.

Absolutely.

Without it you couldnt resist cutting welfare handouts without whining "but corporate welfare". Easy song and dance.

Tax expenditures are by far the biggest government wealth redistribution program out there. They dwarf all other forms of welfare and are the single biggest cause of high tax rates and astronomical over-borrowing by the government.

It is government making the playing field unlevel, keeping the little guys down while giving the big guys a boost.

It's fucking bullshit.

And your solution is?
A ban on tax expenditures. I've been advocating this for years.

It would enable tax rates to be lowered for EVERYONE, balance the budget, and serendipitously provide instant campaign finance reform.

This is a core fiscal conservative principle.

Well I have some bad news for ya, and that is taxes are different in every state, city and town even without abatements. So if a business is concerned about taxation, they will move to a city or state that has lower taxes than the others. You're not going to have a flat state or city tax rate across the country because the federal government doesn't (and can''t) regulate local taxation. So areas lowering their tax rate to be the most business attractive is the only move they have.
