Are the other 23,144 verses of the Bible relevant?

For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 2 Thessalonians 3:10

To my knowledge this is the only verse of the Bible ever quoted by conservatives.

There are 17 other verses in Chapter 3 of Thessalonians. Are they relevant?

How can people continue to pretend that the Bible doesn't promote left wing principles? The Bible is way more consistent with liberal political thought than with conservative politic thought. Does anybody get it?
You can believe that if you want to, but it's total bullshit.

You realize that Thessalonians quote was from Paul, don't you? Taken long after Jesus died, by someone who never even met Jesus, and totally opposite of what Jesus taught.

Earlier in their chapter Paul basically says, "I already told you how to deal with this."

People came to talk and have fun when the purpose of the meeting was to get work done. Paul was telling them to stopping offering food and these gossips will quit coming. Paul was being practical about their situation not writing doctrinal mandates for generations to come. If that was the case the other verses in that scripture would be erased.

Wait. They have been erased. Ok nevermind.

The United States of America was founded on the concept of rebellion against authority aka pride. Pride is the most horrific sin mentioned in the Bible. Yet the nation where I live was founded on the principles of that very sin.

America has always been a Satanic nation but those are Judeo-Christian concepts. In Germanic thought the strong took their rightful place as an independent nation.

I don't know why people deny the use of observation.

Rebellion as evil is a Christian principle.

Destroying the weak is also an evil practice in Christian thought. We are to render to Cesaer not destroy him when he is vulnerable.

This is what you get when you allow those who are not Christians, and who openly hate Christianity, to presume to define Christianity for us.

Agreed. Very Karl Marxist.

It is the nature of socialism to subordinate religion.

Yes but the horrors of an insignificant regular Joe posting ideas on a public message board is almost unimaginable.

What would this world be like if more than 5 people did this?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is not a left wing or a right wing principle.

No? Hmmm. I guess I need to brush up on the differing political ideologies. This concept seems to fit pretty well into one of those categories. Hmmm.

Are you sure about this?

Let's see what an eye witness of our early Republic has to say on this subject, OK?

Alexis de Tocqueville was the famous 19th century French statesman, historian and social philosopher. He traveled to America in the 1830s to discover the reasons for the incredible success of this new nation. He published his observations in his classic two-volume work, Democracy in America. He was especially impressed by America's religious character. Here are some startling excerpts from Tocqueville's great work:

Upon my arrival in the United States the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention; and the longer I stayed there, the more I perceived the great political consequences resulting from this new state of things.

In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom marching in opposite directions. But in America I found they were intimately united and that they reigned in common over the same country.

Religion in America...must be regarded as the foremost of the political institutions of that country; for if it does not impart a taste for freedom, it facilitates the use of it. Indeed, it is in this same point of view that the inhabitants of the United States themselves look upon religious belief.

I do not know whether all Americans have a sincere faith in their religion -- for who can search the human heart? But I am certain that they hold it to be indispensable to the maintenance of republican institutions. This opinion is not peculiar to a class of citizens or a party, but it belongs to the whole nation and to every rank of society.

In the United States, the sovereign authority is religious...there is no country in the world where the Christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America, and there can be no greater proof of its utility and of its conformity to human nature than that its influence is powerfully felt over the most enlightened and free nation of the earth.

In the United States, the influence of religion is not confined to the manners, but it extends to the intelligence of the people...

Christianity, therefore, reigns without obstacle, by universal consent...

I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors...; in her fertile fields and boundless forests; in her rich mines and vast world commerce; in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and in her matchless Constitution.

Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.

America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.

The safeguard of morality is religion, and morality is the best security of law as well as the surest pledge of freedom.

The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other

Christianity is the companion of liberty in all its conflicts -- the cradle of its infancy, and the divine source of its claims.

The Founding Fathers of America believed that liberty and freedom could not exist without morality and virtue and that morality and virtue could not exist without religion.

George Washington
Farewell Address, Sept 17, 1796

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports...In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens...”

The Will of the People: Readings in American Democracy (Chicago: Great Books Foundation, 2001), 38.

George Washington
Farewell Address, Sept 17, 1796

“…And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion...reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

The Will of the People: Readings in American Democracy (Chicago: Great Books Foundation, 2001), 38.

John Adams, “Letter to Zabdiel Adams, Philadelphia, 21 June 1776”

“Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand.” John Adams Letter of June 21, 1776, quoted in The Wall Builder Report, Summer 1993

Patrick Henry Letter to Archibald Blair, January 8, 1799

“The great pillars of all government and of social life [are] virtue, morality, and religion. This is the armor…and this alone, that renders us invincible.”

Moses Coit Tyler, Patrick Henry (New York: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1898; reprint, Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1962), 409.

Benjamin Rush Essays, Literary, Moral and Philosophical, 1798

“The only foundation for...a republic is to be laid in Religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments.”

(Philadelphia: Thomas and Samuel F. Bradford, 1798), 8.

I love the part of the bible where it says "God helps those that help themselves". With liberals they want Government to help them because they are too stupid to use God's given gifts..
Strange that of the dozen or so times I've read the bible cover to cover, I've never ran across the verse that says "God helps those who help themselves"

Lol. It doesn't say that. It is even contrary to Christian thought. People are gullible.

That all depends on the context.

If the context is helping yourself at the expense of others, sure, it’s contrary to Christian thought.

If it is helping yourself to progress in your Christ conscientious, it’s not.

I don’t know anyone who does perfect things. We aren’t called to do perfect things. We are called to be perfect. Being perfect means that when we fail we learn from our mistakes and try to do better the next time.

That’s where our relationship with God and prayer comes in. Prayer isn’t about God doing things for us. Prayer is about us doing things for God.

It’s not surprising to me that you lost your faith. Of course that assumes you had faith and you are not a subversive trying to subordinate the faith in others.

"And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them." -- Acts 4:32

I have ancestors who practiced that on this continent nearly 400 years ago, but then they abandoned much of it within a few years.
